FLU SHOTS: Still Available

Flu shots are now available! This year, experts advise that EVERYONE over the age of 6 months should receive a flu vaccine. And, this year, you will not need separate vaccines for the H1N1 virus and the influenza virus: this year's formulation protects from both.

We are making it as easy as possible for you to get vaccinated: our walk-in flu shot clinic (meaning that no appointment is needed) is open for you between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Thursday, until further notice. Of course, you can always call the office to schedule a flu shot appointment.

And, be sure to visit our
Better Health Blog to read more about this year's flu vaccine.

Opportunity to Participate in VITAL Study
Harvard Medical School and the Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston are conducting a study to determine whether taking daily dietary supplements of vitamin D (about 2000 IU) or fish oil (about 1 gram of omega-3 fatty acids) reduces the risk of developing cancer, heart disease and stroke.

The VITamin D and OmegA-3 TriaL (VITAL) examines if these supplements reduce risk in people who DO NOT have a prior history of the aforementioned illnesses or conditions.

You can still participate! Visit http://www.vitalstudy.org/ to find out if you meet the requirements.
Real Life, Real Girls Conference

Bring your daughters to The Real Life, Real Girls conference-a conference designed to offer strategies for teen girls to face the physical, social and emotional challenges they go through during this time in their lives.

Hosted by the Wyoming Youth Services Bureau, the conference also offers advice for moms, including education about menopause. Dr. Larkin, nationally certified menopause provider, addresses mid-life women's health issues in her lecture, "Riding the wave of midlife hormones."

The Real Life, Real Girls conference is Sat., November 6 from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Wyoming High School. For more information or to register, contact the Wyoming Youth Services Bureau at 513.821.2428.
Potential Effects of Combined Hormone Treatment

A recent article in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) discusses previously unpublished findings from the study known as the Women's Health Initiative, a trial that focused on the effects of estrogen plus progestin treatment. The recent findings concluded that women who received the combined hormone treatment were more likely to develop breast cancer. In addition, the breast cancer associated with the combined hormone use was more likely to be lymph node positive (meaning the disease progressed to a more severe stage).

It is important to stress that the increased risk is small, and was only associated with the combined hormone treatment of estrogen plus progestin.
