Beat Cardiovascular Disease - Vascular Screenings Feb. 12

An estimated 81.1 million people in the U.S. have one or more forms of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Unfortunately, patients suffering from it often do not have symptoms until the problem has reached an advanced stage. Screening exams help identify CVD in its earliest stages. For your convenience, we offer four comprehensive tests to help assess your heart health and prevent major health issues associated with cardiovascular risks.

The next screening date is Friday, Feb. 12. During this American Heart Month, we encourage you to get screened and stay healthy.

To schedule an appointment, call us at 513.271.5111. For test details, including current costs and future screening dates, visit our website or contact our office. For more information, including whether or not you are a good candidate for these tests, please check with your provider.

Welcome Susan Stegman, MD

Next month, we will welcome our eighth provider to the practice. Dr. Susan Stegman has been practicing internal medicine in Greater Cincinnati since 1996, and has served as an independent medical examiner and as assistant medical director and physician consultant for several insurance companies. She has a particular research interest in women's heart disease. A graduate of the University of Notre Dame, Dr. Stegman earned her medical degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and completed her residency at The Christ Hospital.

Dr. Stegman, as well as Dr. Miller and certified nurse practitioner Anna Fox, who joined us last year, are currently accepting new patients. If you are happy with your care at Lisa Larkin, MD, & Associates, we welcome and appreciate the opportunity to care for your family and friends.

Those wishing to schedule an appointment should contact our office at 513.571.2111 or officeinfo@lisalarkinmd.com. For more information on our providers, visit us online at www.lisalarkinmd.com.

Better Health Blog

Medical Minute: Matters of the Heart for Women

Cardiovascular disease (CVD), including stroke, is our nation's no. 1 killer. This month alone, as we emphasize an increased awareness of CVD through our support of the Go Red for Women movement, approximately 38,000 women will die from it. That's 460,000 a year - approximately one death per minute. And heart attacks and strokes are beginning to affect more women in their 40s and 50s.

The good news is that CVD is largely preventable by managing and improving your risk factors. The bad news is that 64% of women who die suddenly from CVD had no previous symptoms. This may be because women perceive or present with signs and symptoms of CVD differently than men.

In our latest Medical Minute, certified nurse practitioner and cardiovascular specialist Kathy Noyes, DNP, CNP, gets to the heart of this matter and offers tips on what you can do to avoid becoming a CVD statistic.

New Coumadin Clinic

We are very excited to announce that next month we will begin offering in-office INR testing for immediate results and dosing of your Coumadin.

Our new Coumadin clinic, directed by certified nurse practitioner Anna Fox, will be open on Thursdays; however, appointments may be scheduled for other days, if necessary. Simply call ahead to schedule your appointment, come in for your test, and get your results and dosing changes on the spot - no more telephone tag to track down your results.

Call us at 513.271.511 to schedule your upcoming testing appointment with Anna. And look for additional details via "snail mail."

Note: As of March 1, walk-in nurse visits for PT/INR testing will no longer be offered.

Go Red and Get Moving!

While National Wear Red Day has come and gone, there are plenty of opportunities throughout the year to continue to show your support for the Go Red for Women heart-disease awareness movement.

Mark your calendars now for Sunday, March 28 - Cincinnati's annual Mini-Marathon and Heart Walk. From a 1k walk for stroke and heart-disease survivors to a kids' run, to a full 15k, the day offers a variety of ways for folks of all ages and abilities and get moving - and support the American Heart Association in the process.

For more information or to register, visit www.heartmini.org. For more information on the local Go Red for Women movement, Cincinnati Goes Red, visit www.thechristhospital.com/gored.

Thank you again for the opportunity to participate in your health care. We hope you will take advantage of the many resources available to you, and we look forward to serving you soon!
