Get the Latest on H1N1
|
This month, we officially launched our new practice blog, which is currently dedicated to sharing information with you about the 2009 H1N1 influenza virus. Check it often for updates from Dr. Kim Miller regarding what to do if you get sick, the emergency warning signs for severe illness, how to protect others in the home if a family member is sick, testing, treatment and vaccination.

2009 H1N1 Vaccine UpdateThe latest news from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is that a vaccine will be available later this month. We are still waiting to hear from the state and local health departments regarding distribution of the vaccine. Most likely, it will be initially available only to identified high-risk groups through schools and large health care facilities for employees and high-risk patients. We anticipate the vaccine will be distributed to smaller sites such as our office later on in the process. Two forms of the vaccine will be distributed: an injection with inactive virus and a nasal spray with a weakened form of live virus. The injection can be used in anyone over 6 months of age. The nasal spray can only be used in relatively healthy people under the age of 50. The most common side effect of the injection is soreness at the injection site. Other side effects may include mild fever, body aches and fatigue for a few days after the inoculation. The most common side effects of the spray vaccine include runny nose or nasal congestion, sore throat (in adults), and fever (in children 2 to 6 years of age). We anticipate that we will only receive the injectable vaccine at our office. If you prefer the nasal spray, contact your local health department for more information. For complete H1N1 information and regular updates from Dr. Miller, check out our new practice blog. |

Surviving Breast Cancer - Early Detection is Key
|
 Did you know ...
- Nearly 200,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year.
- 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer during their lifetime.
- When breast cancer is detected early (localized stage), the five-year survival rate is 98%.
During this National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we'd like to remind our women patients that the best way to fight breast cancer is to have a plan that helps you detect the disease in its early stages. Starting in their 20s, women can begin with monthly breast self-exams. Women in their 20s and 30s should have a clinical breast exam as part of their regular periodic health exam; and women age 40 and older should have a clinical breast exam annually, as well as a mammogram screening every year.
The National Breast Cancer Foundation offers an interactive Early Detection Plan tool, which is designed to help remind you to schedule breast self-exams, clinical breast exams and mammograms. From e-mail to text messages to RSS feeds, you can choose how you'd like to be reminded. To learn more about the Early Detection Plan tool, visit the National Breast Cancer Foundation's website. Don't know how to do a self-exam?Visit the American Cancer Society's website for detailed instructions and visuals to guide you through the process.
