SURVIVORS  CLUB

This week I met with the facilitators of our grief recovery workshops to plan, pray, and prepare for the coming year. I really liked something that Pat shared from a book by Ben Sherwood called The Survivors Club.

I love the name of that book because I think every person who has come through our grief recovery program in the past five years is a survivor - a hero of heros - a warrior who perseveres under the worst of circumstances and pushes through to grow and live fully alive.

Sherwood tells us that the word survivor comes from the French word survivre, which means "to live beyond or longer than." You hear the word used like that in obituaries and at funerals all the time. But its origins are from the Latin supervivere, with super meaning "over, beyond" and vivere meaning "to live."

So survivors are those who live above and beyond.....literally, super livers. I will attest to that!

This September we begin another 12-week Healing From Loss workshop. I look forward to meeting another brave group of survivors who have stories to tell and hearts that need some healing. I am blessed to be a part of such a ministry, and I am always reminded of what strong and noble - yet fragile - human beings we are.

Sherwood says in his book, "Eventually, everyone joins the fellowship of men and women who have been knocked around by life. Admission is inescapable. Membership is inevitable....everyone is destined to become a survivor."

It's quite a large club. Welcome to all!
