IN THIS ISSUE |
"How do I increase sales?" is often the topic that clients give as their most important need. Perhaps that's because many business owners have expertise in their field or industry, but have limited sales experience, so we're featuring articles with helpful tips on selling that are applicable for both new and experienced sales people.
"How can I reach out to clients and prospects in a cost-effective manner?" is another question that's asked frequently. Keeping in touch with clients and prospects is critical to the success of your business. There are many vehicles to do this, but one of the easiest and most cost-effective is through email, so we're sharing articles on this subject.
We're also sharing information about a new on-line tool that may help you find the right lender when seeking financing.
Speaking of sharing, many SCOREBOARD readers have asked how they can share an article with others, or comment to Knoxville SCORE about an article. Well, we've added tools that allow you to do so. Each article has a link to our Facebook page which you can "Like," add comments or reaction to an article, and see what's happening between issues of SCOREBOARD. We've also added an email link you can use to share articles you think would be beneficial for friends and colleagues by coping the URL of the article and pasting it into the email's comment box. For Facebook users, you can share an article with other Facebook friends by logging in to Facebook, inserting a comment and the URL link, clicking "SHARE," and selecting the recipients.
May 16-20 was designated Small Business Week, which Greater Knoxville SCORE observed by recognizing clients who have achieved success with their business. This year's recipients are David Glass, owner of Cable TEnsion LLC, and Mike Robinson, founder of Heatseeker Technology and Design. Be sure to read their stories to see how they found a need, devised a way to solve it, and how they've utilized SCORE counseling to achieve success.
We encourage you to read these articles to make your business even more successful, and remember that SCORE is here "For The Life Of Your Business." |

HOW TO INCREASE SALES |
Every business must sell their products or services, so learning how to sell is critical. Here are three ways to sharpen your sales skills to increase your sales.
Your presentation sometimes is to a group, which can be nerve-racking at the best of times, but especially when pitching for new business. Here are seven tips from public speaking experts on how to make small business pitches more effective. "How To Pitch To Clients" offers advice on how to make your pitches more effective.
Sales often are gained or lost not by your product's quality or price, but by how your "front line" is perceived by the customer. This may be clerks, customer service, or sales people. Learn how to improve these areas of your business in "Invest in the Front Line to Grow the Bottom Line." Note: while addressing the retail industry, the lessons are applicable to all businesses.
The Young Entrepreneur Council recently asked 11 successful young entrepreneurs to share how they market a business. Read their answers in "11 Ways to Create Sales." |

STAYING IN TOUCH MEANS STAYING IN MIND |
Whether it's to let customers know about new products, promotions, events, or share information, maintaining contact and engaging is key to keeping your firm's name entrenched in their mind, and increase your ability to keep them as loyal customers. While social media is the current "in" tool and is important, email is still a very viable and effective tool. Here are three articles that give advice on how to use it to your advantage.
Some great reasons for using email include that it's relentless, inexpensive, and responsive. Read more in "The Power of Email Marketing: Yes, It's Still the King!"
There are many ways to use email, and the most five are explained in "Top 5 Ways to Use Small Business Email Marketing."
"How Can Small Businesses Elevate Their Email Marketing?" explains how blending technology and classic marketing techniques can help small businesses achieve higher response rates and bigger profits. |
| Clients of The Year | |
National Small Business Week was celebrated May 16-20, and our chapter acknowledged the importance of small businesses by conducting a "Client of the Year" contest. Applicants submit a story of their business success and how SCORE contributed. This year's winners are examples of entrepreneurs who recognized a problem, created a solution, and began marketing it.
 | | Glass and his wife Judith receive Client of the Year award from Counselor Richard Jenkins | David Glass, an avid tennis player, knew that balls hitting the top of the court net reacted differently when playing on different courts and facilities. After discovering the cause was inconsistent tension of the nets on different courts, he solve the problem, by creating a device that measures and maintains a consistent tension, making the game of tennis fair for all players. He created Cable Tension LLC to manufacture and market the device, which he named TNT Gauge. Over the past year, It has been used in many professional and college tournaments, and will be featured in the US Open this summer.
 | | Mike Robinson founder of Heatseeker Technology & Design accepts his Client of the Year Award from SCORE counselor Arnold Klugman while General Manager Mike Robinson Jr. and Sales Manager Ken Tuggle look on |
Mike Robinson, a veteran firefighter, knew that periodic resting and cooling off was critical to the safety and health of fellow firefighters. Part of the cooling down "rehabbing" process is to "mist" the firefighters, but devices available to do this were too expensive for most volunteer and rural fire departments. He developed a device that uses a fire truck's pumping system to produce a cooling mist, creating an inexpensive and readily available life-saving device. He formed Heatseeker Technology & Design LLC, and working with SCORE, created sales and promotion plans resulting in the device being purchased by fire departments across the country. He plans to expand its use into other areas requiring cooling, such as athletic fields and use by the military and law enforcement agencies.

| News You Can Use | |
There is a bank on every corner. If you don't like the answer you get from one, go to the one across the street." That advice used to work, but probably not in today's economy. There's a new tool that can help you find a bank that may help you, however, and you can learn about it in "How To Find a Small Business -Friendly Bank."
You Tube; the world's largest online video community, has introduced a separate channel for non-profit organizations. This is a great opportunity to tell your non-profit's story to a vast number of individuals including potential new supporters, volunteers and donors. Best of all, IT"S FREE!
