July/August - Volume 5, Issue 4

A business resource providing business owners and managers with tips, ideas, and news to help your business grow and become more successful.

WHAT'S IN THIS ISSUE

Okay, maybe SCORE can't help you "Beat The Heat" but this issue can help you "Beat The Nay-Sayers."

If you've been keeping up with current business news, you know that many economists are not being very positive about our economy, with several even suggesting a "double-dip" recession. However, there are ways that small business owners can counter-attack these reports, and this issue of SCOREBOARD deals with two of the most vexing issues - financing and revenue growth.

On news of local interest, our last issue of SCOREBOARD included a story on SCORE client Gary Bickford, whose firm Healthy Life Clinic had been named the national winner of SCORE's award as "Outstanding Small Business Launched by an Individual Aged 50+".   Another of our chapter's clients received national attenion in June. Tracy Fostor, founder of the non profit organization Project Being There, was featured in NBC's national nightly news feature "Making a Difference" in June. We invite you to click here to read how her organization is assisting an orphanage in Vietnam.

So while we may not be able to help you "beat the heat" this summer, we know that the articles in this issue can help you "beat the nay-sayers." And remember, SCORE exists "For The Life Of Your Business."

HAVE YOU HEARD ABOUT THE SMALL BUSINESS LENDING FUND?

In September 2010, Congress created the Small Business Jobs Act which included a program called Small Business Lending Fund.  Administered by the Treasury Department, the program authorized $30 billion to be available to community banks as capital for lending to small businesses.  As of late July, 900 banks have applied for $11.6 billion from this fund, but only $337 million has been disbursed.  Check with your community banks to see if they plan to apply for this funding or have received funding already. To read more about this program, read "Community Banks Finally Receive SBLF Funds" and "Small-Biz Loan Money Finally Trickles to Community Banks."

 A NEW SOURCE FOR LOANS

Most small businesses seeking financing generally look to traditional lending institutions like banks and credit unions. Some small-business owners, rejected by banks or fed up with bad lending terms, have discovered another source, peer-to-peer lenders. These are Internet sites that match borrowers with giant pools of lenders when they need funds. Two of the largest such lenders, Prosper Marketplace Inc. and Lending Club Corp., generated more than $500 million in personal loans during the past five years.  if you're looking for a different type of lending source you might consider this type. To learn more about its pros and cons, read "Peer to Peer Loans Grow."

TO INNOVATE OR IMITATE: THAT IS THE QUESTION!

Innovation seems to be all the rage these days, as both start-ups and established businesses strive to find new products and services to put their growth rate on the fast track. But the truth is that the majority of successful businesses weren't started by geniuses like Thomas Edison, and "first to market" does not always mean market leadership.  Think about a couple of recent examples: Facebook wasn't the first social networking site, just as Google  was far from the first search engine. The advantage that both Facebook and Google leveraged was that they were late-movers, says Navdeep Mundia professor of management at the Marshall School of Business at the University of Southern CaliforniaWhen you set about finding the next great new idea, remember the old quotation "Imitation is the greatest form of flattery."  You might want to examine  "Nine Reasons Why It Pays to Imitate" for tips from business leaders and thinkers about why imitation can often be better than innovation as a business strategy.

WHAT COMES AFTER IPOD AND IPAD?

We all know about IPOD and IPAD products, but have you heard about UPOD? It isn't a new Apple product, but a tactic you can use to create more customers and turn your current ones into loyal, long term customers. Learn how to use UPOD in your business in "How To Turn Customers into Fans."

HOW TO PLAY IN THE BIG LEAGUES

One of the most common ways to start a business is to begin selling a product that you've either made or designed through local markets and fairs, small local retailers, or even on line. But at some point, you've also thought about how to take your product line to the big-box big leagues.

That's a tough leap to make for many retailers. Not only is it tough to attract the attention of the Targets, Walmarts, and Costcos of the world, but supplying the big-boxes comes with additional costs and time pressures that can crimp your bottom line. That said, getting your product onto the shelves of a big-box retailer can help catapult your company's growth onto the fast track. "How To Get Your Product into the Big Box Big Leagues" details how five individuals surmounted these obstacles and got their products into big box stores.

SCORE Is Looking For A Few Good Men And Women

The Greater Knoxville SCORE Chapter is recruiting volunteers to assist the small business community in our coverage area. If you're an experienced business owner or have managed a business, and would like to counsel small business owners, we'd like to speak with you. In addition to volunteer counselors, we're also seeking volunteers with experience or talents in making presentations, performing administrative functions, and assisting in fund raising efforts. If you are interested, or know someone who fits these needs, contact SCORE at 865-692-0717 or email us at volunteer@scoreknox.org.

PS - it is not necessary for volunteers to be retired.
