At last month's Leaders Roundtable (for Board members, presentation posted on floridadistrict.org), I introduced the idea of creating checklists for better leadership.
I had been impressed by a study at Johns Hopkins Hospitals that led to dramatic decrease in surgical infections after doctors were required to use a 5 point list for one routine, but critical procedure. I wondered, if checklists help pilots or surgeons not inadvertently skip a step and help ensure safety, might they also help congregational leaders to do likewise?
For instance, consider preparing a meeting agenda. If you had a list of "things not to be forgotten" and you checked off each one, might you not be better prepared for your next meeting? Or, if, as part of their training discipline, worship associates were given a list of what and when various aspects of the order of service had to be in place, might there be fewer instances of lay leaders (clergy, too!) forgetting to light the chalice or call for the offering? And so on.
I imagine you could think of steps your hospitality team might prepare to ensure your visiting guests feel welcome and that would make the unpracticed greeter feel more secure when it's her/his turn. The idea could be applied to prosaic things like monthly building maintenance or morally important issues like a applying a child safety policy.
The point is that the simple idea of a checklist can make congregational life easier all around and lead to doing things right more often. If you'd like to learn more about this notion, get a hold of Atul Gawande's The Checklist Manifesto: How to Get Things Right. It's an enjoyable and easy read, well worth your time.
And, if you have suggestions for such a list (keep it short, 5-7 seems to be magical number), please send them to me. This might make an interesting shared project for the year.
All blessings, Rev. Kenn |

For fifty years we have been doing things one way. Each year, congregational delegates traveled from across the Unitarian Universalist Association to our General Assembly to focus on business and the unique situation of the host site.
Now in the fifty-first year of our consolidated Association, things will be different! And your District will be mirroring many of those changes as well.
In late June, 2012, General Assembly will be held in Phoenix, Arizona, structured around a shared value, Justice, rather than around a shared business agenda. And, in late June, 2012, congregations across our Association will be invited to a Day of National Service and Witness in their local communities, not just in Phoenix. We will be called to the vision and work of justice where we live and work and worship.
Even the small amount of business which will be conducted will be opened to people everywhere. The 2011 Bylaw amendment on off-site voting allows for active, valid participation on an equal basis for people voting in Phoenix, Jacksonville, Key West, Orlando, and even Jupiter. General Assembly has come home, to a city or town near you!
On Saturday, June 23, 2012, all of our congregations will be called to express themselves in their local communities through organized education, action, and witness. Now is the time to begin thinking about what that expression of your Unitarian Universalist values might look like in your community. Keep in mind some important questions as you plan:
- how will we plan for whole-congregation participation: how we involve people of all ages and abilities speaks as much to justice as will our other actions.
- what are the ways in which we address root causes more than just symptoms?
- with whom do we need to develop sustained partnerships now in the work of justice to prepare for June?
- how can we transform this call to action into an abiding presence more than just a single event?
On March 23-25, 2012, in Jacksonville, we will gather in our District Assembly, which will be a time to share, learn, grow, and experience around these same themes, helping us better tend to the justice work in all of our communities. Like the General Assembly, much of the District Assembly's program features will be available electronically to those who cannot get to Jacksonville.
I am hoping to hear, at District Assembly, about exciting plans for June 23 in all of our local communities, a day when Unitarian Universalism comes alive in the civic life of Florida.
Wouldn't it be wonderful if people around the whole Unitarian Universalist Association pointed to Florida with pride and said: "Wow, look at the many, diverse programs of justice work they created there!"
Time to get organizing, planning, recruiting, connecting is now!
Be in touch if you want more ideas about what and how and why . . . from broad theological ponderings to specific issues such as child-friendly justice action and time-line planning.

It is both exciting and heartening when I talk with Florida UUs and learn they are working successfully in their congregations on social justice issues and have as a congregational goal, record-breaking attendance at Justice General Assembly (GA) 2012. When we go to Phoenix next June we will be joining hands and hearts with local congregations and partner groups to increase our capacity to be a significant force for justice all through our UUA. Workshops will focus on justice issues and ways to organize in our communities, with significant focus on immigration problems. Also of course there will be excellent worship services and wonderful speakers.
Background: We know our current immigration system is not working. About eleven million undocumented immigrants are living and working within the U.S. borders without a way to get to citizenship. Rights are violated by unjust raids and detentions. Families wait years, sometimes decades, to be reunited due to tremendous visa backlogs. Our nation's focus on enforcement-only policies and militarization of the border has led to much suffering, human rights abuses and sometimes death.
One of the immigrant groups with whom we are in partnership is Puente Arizona. Puente AZ is part of a global movement for migrant justice and human rights. This is a grassroots community-based group that promotes justice, non-violence, interdependence and human dignity. Puente AZ works to empower the community and build relationships by working collaboratively with various organizations and individuals.
Also we have been invited to enter into partnership with the National Day Laborers Organizing Network (NDLON). NDLON is committed to improving the lives of day laborers in the U.S., and works to unify and strengthen its member organizations to be more strategic and effective in their efforts to develop leadership, mobilize, and organize day laborers. NDLON fosters safer more humane environments for day laborers, both men and women and helps them to earn a living, contribute to society, and be integrated into the community.
The General Assembly Planning Committee (GAPC), the GA 2012 Accountability Group, UUA Administration, and the Board of Trustees are committed to fulfilling the GA 2010 Resolution for a Justice GA. We are counting on our UUA congregations to be involved during the next nine months in preparation for Phoenix. Contact me with questions, concerns, and Board governance business. I am "listening". |

You will be able to nominate those you wish to send to Southern Unitarian Universalist Leadership Experience ("SUULE") beginning October 15th. Nominations will close December 15th. The nominating process will be similar to last year. Participants must come in congregational teams of two or more leaders (including ministers, DREs, etc.). Sorry but no solo participants will be accepted. The cost per participant is $695 the same as last year (covers room & board, all meals, and materials except for the two books for required pre-work).
SUULE is an intense and deeply spiritual experience for lay and clergy alike. It will focus on the presence and functioning of the individual leaders and will help to form them into a team who serve Unitarian Universalism as servant leaders to their congregations and elders of the faith. Through small group experiences, case studies, lectures, worship, and theological dialogue, participants will gain practical understanding of healthy congregation concepts and tools, the value of intentional leadership process, and the vital connections between religious leadership, faith development, and the realization of beloved community.
Our goal is to translate the SUULE experience into tangible congregational health and vitality. Factors that appear to make a difference in how SUULE affects congregational health include participants who come well grounded in Unitarian Universalism, participants who serve significant leadership roles in their congregation, participants who come in teams of two or more from a congregation, congregations who send teams of leaders to SUULE for several years in a row, and congregations that have an intentional process for selecting their SUULE registrants and integrating knowledge and skills from the experience into the life of the congregation.
We urge you to begin considering which leaders would help your congregation benefit most from this experience.
Sincerely,
Peter Kandis

It's Time to Pledge Your Congregation's Support
We do not belong to these larger associations by obligation but rather by covenant. We covenant to affirm and promote the principles of our Association as free churches. Part of that affirmation and promotion is our congregations' financial support. These words by the Rev. John Morehouse point to the importance of each congregation pledging its annual financial support to our UUA and District. Just as the local congregation depends on the knowledge of its members' annual giving intentions to plan its annual budget, our UUA and Districts do as well.
Congregational leaders: This is the time in the year when requested contribution forms sent to each congregation in early June must be returned to the Annual Program Fund Office, 25 Beacon St, Boston, MA 02108.

(Please note, if you downloaded a copy of this earlier in the year, this edition contains updated links following the recent UUA website reorganization.)
Congregational Growth Stories
Created seven years ago, identifying four "breakthrough" congregations is an effort to identify those congregations that had achieved significant and sustained numerical growth and give them an opportunity to share at General Assembly what they've done, and how they've done it. Why not look to the experts-those lay and professional leaders who have already "cracked the nut" around growth-and give them the opportunity at general assembly to share their wisdom?
This year's congregations are:
Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Beaufort, SC: 81 members.
Westside Unitarian Universalist (UU) Congregation, Seattle, WA : 181 members.
Universalist Unitarian (UU) Church of Peoria, IL: 346 members.
Unitarian Universalist (UU) Congregation of Fairfax, VA: 713 members
Each video is about 8 minutes. Hear their stories at Breakthrough Congregation Videos. The are viewable & downloadable online. Will yours be among those honored in the year to come?
Immigration Justice Work
Unitarian Universalist leaders are invited to sharet faith development materials to help congregations faithfully respond to immigration justice issues, whether or not they will be sending delegates to Phoenix for GA 2012. "Cooking Together" includes both a blog, where folks can talk about particular resources, and a web page offering a growing library of resources for Worship, Theological Reflection, Religious Education, and Faithful Witness for people of all ages and life stages. The blog is the "kitchen" where all are invited to experiment with particular resources and put ideas into the simmer pot, and the web page is the "banquet table," with resources for congregations of all sizes and kinds to sample. To find out more, read the first weekly post. Join the cooking and the conversation; we think you will find it a welcoming place to be!
2011 Minns Conference on Composing Our UU Future Video and Text Now Available In April 2011, the Minns Lectureship Committee brought together Unitarian Universalist clergy, seminarians, lay leaders, and parishioners from across the country to reflect on the present state of Unitarian Universalism, as well as hopes and intentions for the future of this liberal religious tradition. The slate of speakers and panelists included some of the most engaging, passionate voices in Unitarian Universalism today; their complete lectures are available online now in both video and text formats at http://minnslectures.org/2011_series.php. |
