Notes & Comments From Our District Executive

RevKennHurto

Gathered Here is a broad-reaching initiative of our UUA to cast a new vision of the Free Church. The UUUA Board and President Morales invite all Unitarian Universalists to shape our common aspirations and to articulate a new vision of our ministries.

Beginning in October and for 16 months, one-on-one, in small groups within and between congregations, guided conversations will lift up who we are at our best. Participants will be asked to think about their faith experience and of meaningful, even transforming moments in our communities. By reflecting on how those positive experiences are relevant to our future, we will create a new vision for Unitarian Universalism.

This is your quintessential "bottom-up" inquiry. The goals are "to inform and deepen our collective understanding of congregational values and aspiration" as a way to shape a compelling vision for our Association's future. Your participation will help us to think more clearly about what impact we seek to have within our congregations and among our communities.

Lead facilitators have been recruited. Group facilitators are being recruited and trained this month. If you would like to join that team, let me know directly (or complete the Volunteer Application). Meanwhile, talk with your minister or congregational leaders to plan now for your congregation members to participate personally and at a congregationally or cluster based event.

Fuller details can be found at: http://www.uua.org/uuagovernance/vision/ and Frequently Asked Questions

I look forward to learning of your Vision/s! Rev. Kenn

Notes from Our Lifespan Program Consultant

Rev.RandyBecker2010People often lament that so few of our children and youth seem to stay Unitarian Universalists as adults.  They point to the reputed statistic that only about 10% of our members grew up as Unitarian Universalists.

This finding has led more than one parsimonious finance-minded person to suggest that our Religious Education programs are failing in their efforts, and that we would be better off committing the money spent in other ways.

But here is what research with adults has shown us: those who continue to be religiously active report four factors as vital to their continuing participation:

1) the congregation took the programs for children and youth seriously, and treated them as integral elements in the holistic life and vision of the congregation.

2) they regularly experienced adult worship and slowly became aware of its power and meaning in the lives of adults.   They could see a place for themselves in the worship life of a congregation as adults.

3) they had a good, on-going relationship with the key religious professionals in their congregation.  The Minister or Director of Religious Education knew their name, knew about their lives, and showed that they cared about the young person as a person.  The leaders in the congregation were not just "up there" but were people they could approach and talk with.

4) they had on-going, appropriate relationships with adults in the congregation other than their parents.  It was evident that other adults valued them and did not just see them as an obligation, a distraction, or a nuisance.

Without these four factors fulfilled, even the best Religious Education program will not encourage our young people to remain with us as adults.

AND, another study of those young adults who are active in our movement found that an equally important factor in their on-going involvement was that the congregation provided Adult Education which encouraged their continued growth and development as adults.   Unitarian Universalists choose to be involved in congregations not so much for confirmation of who they already are as to be challenged to be all they could be.  If one does not feel like one is encouraged to growth in a congregation, one is likely to look elsewhere.

So, ask yourself - is your local congregation one that is growing Unitarian Universalists across the whole life span?  It takes more than an RE program to do that!!!

Trustee News

Joan Lund 1-2011UUA TRUSTEE TIDBITS

Joan Lund, September 2011

jlund@uua.org or 813-931-9727

Last month I committed to writing Trustee columns through next spring about topics related to Justice GA, June 2012 in Phoenix. Unfortunately I don't have any additional specific information about this historic GA yet, but am compelled to write about the connection between our UUA Second Principle (Justice, equity and compassion in human relations) and our UUA faith community's commitment to help bring to the world tolerance and social justice. Our work next year at GA will be all about justice and much about compassion.

Karen Armstrong, the Ware Lecturer at this year's GA and author of many books on religion including Twelve Steps To a Compassionate Life, message centered upon the Golden Rule, which requires we use empathy to put ourselves in the shoes' of others and act toward other humans as we would want them to act toward us. In 2008 Armstrong was awarded the Technology, Entertainment, Design (TED) prize. TED is a nonprofit organization best known for excellent conferences on "ideas worth spreading". With the prize money she established the Charter for Compassion which is inspiring compassionate actions, by building partnership networks with organizations around the world.

In her words, "The principle of compassion lies at the heart of all religious, ethical and spiritual traditions, calling us always to treat others as we wish to be treated". Compassion can be defined as an attitude of principled, consistent altruism. She believes compassion is intrinsic in all human beings and we need to work to cultivate and expand our capacity for compassion. According to Armstrong compassion impels us to work tirelessly to alleviate the suffering of our fellow creatures, take ourselves out of being the center of our world, and put another there, and to honor every human being with equity, justice and respect. She believes each one of us must look into our own hearts, discover what gives us pain, and then refuse to inflict that pain on anybody else.

Although compassion may be recognized and admired by all of us and has resonated with humans throughout history, Armstrong believes in many ways compassion is alien to our modern way of life.

It is important that as many UUs as possible attend GA 2012 where there will be many events, activities, and ways to bear witness to social justice both in Arizona and in our home community congregations. If ever you determined you want to go to a General Assembly, this is the one. Wouldn't it be wonderful if there are more Florida UUs percentage-wise at GA than any other district? We can do it! Call or write with your thoughts, ideas, and concerns. I look forward to hearing from you.

Here is a tool to help you recruit and welcome new guests to your congregation. The second year of this non-denominational program offers a free online outreach assessment by which you can review your hospitality practices. Of course, you'll need to do some translation as it is written for mainline Protestant groups. However, you will find useful insights. And no, you do not need to buy any of their marketing materials (although a few are worth considering). Rev. Kenn

Interest growing in the UUs and Allies Nationwide Community Radio Network  (http://uugrowth.com/uuradio/)

Nationwide, 1,678 e-action comments were sent to the FCC in the last few weeks.  UUs in Florida responded from Naples, Ft. Myers, Port Charlotte, Venice, Melbourne, Ormond Beach, West Palm, and more.  If you were not able to show interest in community radio for your area during the comment period, you may still have a chance to compete for the coming Low Power FM frequencies. Be thinking of local community groups that would make good partners.  You can follow the LPFM docket 99-25 at  http://fjallfoss.fcc.gov/ecfs/proceeding/view?z=sdvae&name=99-25 Also see this article: http://thehill.com/blogs/hillicon-valley/technology/180207-house-members-want-fcc-to-license-more-low-power-fm-stations

Developments from our UULMF 2011 Florida Media Reform Tour:

After the success of our 11-day. 11-city tour from March 25-April 5th, UUs in other states have expressed interest in hosting broadcast reform tours with Sue Wilson screening her documentary Broadcast Blues.  See film clips at www.suewilsonreports.com.  This film not only shows the problem with corporate domination of the media, but what people can do about it.  The next tour is in Wisconsin, September 17-27, 2011.

Move to Amend growing nationwide

UUs at General Assembly 2011 passed our Action of Immediate Witness to "Oppose Citizens United-Support Free Speech for People". The issue of corporate personhood is now on the UUA radar. UU congregations around the country have been hosting David Cobb Move to Amend speaking tours, as UU congregations in Florida did in September, 2010. UULMF has officially endorsed Move to Amend to work toward a Constitutional amendment to say that "corporations are not persons and money is not speech".  We are working to create an issue group for "corporate personhood" in our national UU State Advocacy Networks (UUSANS).  Individuals and organizations are encouraged to sign the resolution at www.movetoamend.org, and local organizations and town councils are encouraged to pass such a resolution and put it on record.  Please email Carla Christianson if you do, at carlaormand@gmail.com Carla is Coordinator of Florida Move to Amend.

Things to Know in Our Extended Unitarian Universalist World

UUA President Convicted

Rev. Peter MoralesThe Rev. Peter Morales, President of the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA), was convicted of misdemeanor charges related to his act of peaceful civil disobedience in protest of Arizona's anti-immigrant legislation. For his act of conscience, he received a sentence of one day in jail, with credit for the one day already served.

In response to the conviction, President Morales stated, "As people of faith, we are called to oppose injustice and help protect the most vulnerable among us... We Unitarian Universalists will continue to stand on the side of love against such legislation and the anti-immigrant sentiment it represents." You can read his full statement here. Preparing for Justice GA 2012

What would best help you in preparing your congregation to support Justice GA 2012 - both congregants who are going to Phoenix and those who want to offer support in their local context? Are you looking for worship resources? Thoughtful theological grounding for our immigration justice work? Information about immigration? Spiritual preparation materials for participants? Small Group Ministry plans for adults, youth, or families? Adult RE materials? Materials for children's or intergenerational worship and programming? Suggestions for getting involved in local immigration issues? Successful models for congregational actions? Service and reflection ideas for youth? Something else?

In an "open source" spirit, we invite you to share. Tell us what you have developed for your congregation that may help others. Tell us what resources you need to prepare for Justice GA or to help your congregation respond faithfully to the justice issues that surround immigration policies and realities in our time. As we develop this collection of resources, tell us what would be most useful to you- what content, what format, and anything else you would like us to know. Please be in touch with Gail Forsyth-Vail, Adult Programs Director, who is leading the task force dedicated to this effort, gforsythvail@uua.org or call 617-948-6519.

Let's reach out one to another and work on creating the very best set of resources we can - as quickly as we possibly can. Thank you!

UUA Common Read

Acts of Faith book coverThe Common Read selection committee has chosen Acts of Faith (Beacon Press, 2007) as this year's Common Read.

Eboo Patel's memoir is especially appropriate for a congregational year which begins with the tenth anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Patel shares his faith journey as a young American Muslim and the call to religious pluralism which led him to found the Interfaith Youth Core (IFYC). Frankly discussing the appeal of religious fundamentalism to young people, Patel challenges those who believe in religious pluralism to support young people to

ground themselves in a faith that feeds their cooperation across faiths to make the world a better place.

Check out www.uua.org/commonread for more about Acts of Faith and information on planning and leading a congregational Common Read project, or to download a color PDF flyer. A discussion guide adaptable for youth/young adult, adult, and cross-generational UU groups will be available in October.

Indigenous Peoples Day

Dear all,

I wanted to give you a heads-up regarding a special push that the office of Multicultural Growth is doing this year to encourage congregations to celebrate Indigenous Peoples Day on October 10.

As part of the initiative, we have a beautiful new Indigenous Peoples Day web page (www.uua.org/indigenouspeoplesday) that offers, among other things, 10 ways to celebrate the holiday, and there will be a flyer in the September congregational bulletin (attached). We are planning for this to be an ongoing initiative rather than a 1 year special promotion, and this is also going to be a Standing on the Side of Love initiative. Soon to come will be a web form where folks can input what they plan to do to celebrate the holiday.

I hope you'll be as excited about this holiday as I am, and please be in touch with any questions or promotional ideas!

Warm regards,

Alex Kapitan

Apply Now for Moderator or Nominate Your Candidate

Gini Courter's term as Moderator of the UUA will be up in 2013, and we need to find the best possible successor. Who do you think should be the next Chair of the UUA's Board of Trustees? Who is the best person to preside at General Assembly? Who, using different language, is best qualified to be the Chief Governance Officer of our Association?

Maybe that person is you. Or maybe you know of someone else who would be great in the role. In either case, let us know. We are the Moderator Nominating Committee, appointed by your Board of Trustees to recommend candidates for this all-important position. We are ready to receive applications and nominations now. Just go to www.uua.org/uuagovernance. There you'll find a link to our Call for Nominations and to an electronic application form. Applications and nominations are due by October 15, 2011.

Based on the Bylaws amendment approved at GA 2010, our committee will submit a report to the Board of Trustees in late November. The Board will recommend a candidate or candidates by February 1, 2012, for a single six-year term beginning at the close of General Assembly 2013.

Does your call to serve our faith include the possibility of service as Moderator? Do you think you know someone else who might hear that call? If you are thinking of nominating another, know that you need to receive that person's consent to be nominated before giving us the name. We will ask for a complete resume from all applicants and nominees, along with a list of references, as outlined in the electronic application form.

We look forward to hearing from you. You can reach us by email at modnomcom@uua.org.

UU United Nations Sunday

uu uno logoIn celebration of the founding of the United Nations on October 24th, 1945, the UU-United Nations Office invites congregations and individual UUs to deepen their understanding of the UN by devoting one service in October to reaffirming the connections between UU principles and vital issues dealt with at the UN.

The UN Sunday Resource Packet includes everything you need to plan a UN Sunday service, from the history of the UN to a sample Order of Service with suggested hymns and readings. The packet also includes information about our theme for this years UN Sunday: Empower Women for a Better World.

This year's UN Sunday will take place on October 23rd.

A Religion for Our Time Video Series - Recent Episodes

A Religion For Our TimeEpisode Sixteen, "Worship For All Ages!" shows how Reverend Erika Hewitt and her worship leaders increase attendance by creating the magic of story-based intergenerational worship at the Live Oak UU Congregation in Goleta, California. Based on the concepts illustrated in Hewitt's book, Story, Song & Worship (published by Skinner House), this is intergenerational worship that engages kids and adults alike.

Episode Seventeen, "Greater Good Project" shows how the First Unitarian Church in Rochester, New York has developed an amazing holiday tradition.Congregants decied how much they spend on the holidays and then give half of that amount to the church! The children then decide what local and international charities the money will support. After five years, this remarkable project provides a whole new meaning to the holidays for hundreds of UU families and for the people they help.

Episode Eighteen, "Unitarian Universalists Rebuilding New Orleans" shows how three UU congregations in New Orleans, like the city itself, were devastated by Hurricane Katrina. However that devastation became an inspiration, not an obstacle, to the members of all three churches. Their resilience and determination have been in evidence every day of the last five years as they rebuild not only their churches, but the city of New Orleans itself.
