 | Help Our Partners in Japan |
| | |

As the news from Japan worsens, I send my heartfelt sympathies to all those struggling to cope with this terrible disaster.
As the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) president, I traveled to Japan last August to meet with our religious partners there. The warm hospitality offered to my wife, Phyllis, and me left us with a beautiful and lasting impression of their country and culture. My heart goes out to the people of Japan for what they are enduring now.
As soon as the UUA received word of the tragedies of Friday, March 11, we reached out to our religious partners in Japan: Rissho Kosei-kai, Tsubaki Grand Shrine, the Konko Church of Izuo, the Tokyo Dojin Church, and the Japan Chapter of the International Association for Religious Freedom. We have worked in close partnership with these outstanding organizations for many decades, and have been in contact with them since Friday. I can only imagine the overwhelming sadness and fear they are experiencing, even as they try to determine their next steps.
To this end, the UUA/Unitarian Universalist Service Committee (UUSC) Japan Relief Fund has been established to support the recovery efforts of our religious partners in Japan, as they consider the specific efforts to take to support the work of recovery. I encourage anyone wishing to contribute to this crucial effort to read more about the UUA/UUSC Japan Relief Fund here.
For several months, the Rev. Eric Cherry, the UUA's Director of International Resources, has had a trip to Japan scheduled for later this month. The situation on the ground is still extremely volatile, but as I write this, Eric intends to make the trip if at all possible. If he is able to make the journey, he will convey my sincere condolences and profound hope for swift recovery on behalf of the entire Unitarian Universalist Association.
We at the UUA will hold the country of Japan in our hearts, as we work to support them in their time of great need.
Sincerely,
Rev. Peter Morales President, Unitarian Universalist Association |
 | District Annual Assembly |
| | |
We hope you are planning to attend the Florida District Annual Assembly. This weekend of programs, worship, fellowship, workshops and networking will be held April 8-10 at the First Unitarian Church of Orlando.
Featured program notes:
Building Beloved Community in our Songs
What are we teaching when we sing? Which songs tell a story that resonates with us, in celebration and in pain? How can we embrace the many cultures and generations that give music to our message? Join Janice Marie Johnson, Director of Multicultural Growth and Witness of the UUA and Sarah Dan Jones, President of the UU Musician's Network, as we explore together our past, present and future in articulating our faith in song and story. Come prepared to listen to our stories and songs, and share your own as we flesh out ideas to expand our social justice and worship gatherings in crafting an intentional community that stands on the side of love.
And an update on our Saturday evening entertainment:
The Tuesday Nite Band, Jamie Sterrett, Director & Members of 1U, plus Jars of Jam, from the Unitarian Universalist University Society, Orlando, come together to offer a diverse, musical tour for your enjoyment. Among their selections: a broad variety of Third World music, including peace activist Labi Siffre, remarkably relevant pop singer Katy Perry, the timeless ballad En Mi Viejo SanJuan,( in Spanish) and the Irish anti-war song The Wind that Shakes the Barley.
The songwriting of John Lennon and Bruce Springsteen will present counterpoint to three UU inspired originals by the Tuesday Nite Band as well as an original arrangement of Peter Mayer's Blue Boat Home. The finale combines the talents of both groups in a stirring rendering of We Shall Be Free. This almost unknown song from the 90's comes from an album by Garth Brooks; it is UU-centric in its lyric and ahead of its time.
There are plenty of Home Hospitality hosts awaiting guests. Please contact Michelle Bergandi to make arrangements, 407-721-9277 or council@orlandouu.org .
An updated list of Lodging Options is available. Click here for additional information.

Tips for Using Social Media |
| | |
From the InterConnections Tipsheet
The UUA blog New Media for Unitarian Universalists has an overview of the opportunities and challenges of using social media in congregations. Topics include building online relationships with those who visit your congregation, and sorting out when and why to use various new media, including blogs, Facebook, Twitter, podcasting, and YouTube.
The blog includes a video of a presentation by Shelby Meyerhoff, the UUA's public witness specialist, to the Massachusetts Bay District's 2010 Spring Conference on the topic of using social media. The blog also has a Frequently Asked Questions section, one on "Getting Started" with new media, and separate sections on specific tools like Facebook and podcasts.

Unitarian Universalist Legislative Ministry Florida |
| | |

Thanks to all congregations who have become members of UULMF by budgeting $1.00 per member for annual dues and mailing that check to the District, with "UULMF annual dues" in the memo line. Let's have 100% participation by Florida UU congregations. "We nurture our souls and help heal the world when we join hands and take action."
Thanks also to all congregations who are scheduling a 50/50 Share the Plate collection for UULMF during the critical 2011 Florida legislative session from March 8-May 6. We have much to do to impact our legislators for the good. Please join us in Tallahassee April 13th as we lobby for the homeless with the Florida Coalition for the Homeless. Email Brian Lee at brian.lee.tallahassee@gmail.com for details.
The exciting news for UULMF this month is the 2011 Florida Media Reform Tour from March 25-April 5 with free screenings of the documentary "Broadcast Blues" with the filmmaker present. The tour will go to UU congregations in Ft. Lauderdale March 25, West Palm March 26, Melbourne March 28, Orlando First UU March 29, Ormond Beach March 30, Jacksonville March 31, St. Augustine April 1, Gainesville April 2, Tampa April 3, Venice April 4, and Ft. Myers April 5.
Another important series of rallies was the Awake the State rallies on Tuesday, March 8th, the start of the Florida legislative session. We hope many of you had a chance to participate in one of 33 events statewide that day to protest proposed draconian cuts to funding for education, the homeless and more. Tampa had over 2000 participants! Orlando's rally opened with a prayer by UU Rev. Kathy Schmitz. Sarasota's rally included a speech by UU Rev. Naomi King-and a surprise speaker, Stephen King!
To stay tuned to all the action, please join our UULMF social justice email list by emailing Rev. Meredith Garmon at mgarmon@uuma.org. |
