Notes & Comments From Our District Executive

RevKennHurto_July2010

Harvard scholar, John Kotter (Our Iceberg is Melting; 2006) argues that many organizations fail due to their inability to instill a sense of urgency and passion in their work. Our UUA President, the Reverend Peter Morales, argues Unitarian Universalism needs to confront the reality of our shrinking place in the religious world. After 50 years, our UUA has essentially the same membership as it did in 1961 -- and our children's programs are in a state of collapse. We need to feel an urgent call to light our Chalice more broadly!

Research suggests that 10% - 25% of a given congregation's membership will turn over every year, losses due mainly to moves and death. Florida's attrition rate is toward the higher end of that figure. As one leader lamented, "We're running as fast as we can just to hold even."

The latest figures from our 2011 membership reports reflect that sentiment and perhaps the larger issues throughout Florida's economy. There are 4743 enrolled adult Unitarian Universalists as of February 1st. That is down from 4857 last year, continuing a four year trend.

Numbers aren't everything, but they are an undeniable measure of our impact. In this time of resurgent orthodoxy, dividing society into the "saved & damned, with increasing inequity in the social well-being of our society, and a polarizing rise of virulent racism, sexism, and homophobia, the Free Church teachings of love and justice are ever more needed. We are the ones the world is waiting for! We are uniquely qualified to witness to a ministry of universal love. The numbers suggest we can do a much better job!

So, let's not have our little light become any littler. Let's ramp up our hospitality and our pathways to membership. Let's work on creating a safe, welcoming, inclusive and beloved community among us. Let's turn these numbers around! And let's do it now!

May the Chalice Light of the Free Church illumine our souls and our society.

Blessings,

Rev. Kenn

POWER from the PEWS:

Influencing and Shaping Congregational Leaders

Empowering Lay Ministry - 2 workshops offered

East Coast: March 5 (register by February 27); West Coast: March 12 (register by March 6)

The term "Follower" has a bad reputation, implying that people who support leaders are passive drones who take orders.  The childhood game, "Follow the Leader," reinforces the stereotype.   This outdated notion can be replaced by the image of a powerful people courageously taking on the role of influencing and shaping their leaders.  It is that idea we explore in the workshop Power from the Pews: Influencing and Shaping Congregational Leaders.  This model rests on trust and courageous truth-telling as people fulfill our ministries.

The Reverend Kenn Hurto, District Executive, and Janet Onnie, District Program Associate, will describe the motivations, characteristics, and values of people who shape our congregational leaders. Participants will discern their "influencer" type.  The workshop presents five types of influencers, then matches them with four kinds of leaders to show how to develop optimum working relationships and how to detect, empower, and reward our congregational influencers. We'll draw on the experiences and insights of participants to draw an image of an exemplary Unitarian Universalist influencer and shaper of congregational leaders.

The East Coast workshop is Saturday, March 5 at the River of Grass Unitarian Universalist Congregation in Davie. A West Coast workshop follows the next Saturday, March 12, 2011 at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Sarasota.  Both workshops will begin at 10am and end at 2pm.  The cost is $15 per person or $35 for a 3-person congregational team, which includes lunch.  Advanced registration is required and may be made at the links listed below.  Questions?  Call the District Office at 407-894-2119.

CHOOSING YOUR GENERAL ASSEMBLY DELEGATES

Come and view a short film about the important task of choosing your UUA General Assembly 2011 Delegates.  (New resource, available February 23.)

It's that time of year again - March 1 registration for General Assembly will open, a scramble for hotel accommodations will occur online, and many travel plans will turn toward Charlotte, North Carolina.   This seems more like planning for a vacation or a family reunion.

But, this is actually the annual governance event of the Association which binds us together as a religious movement. Most of our congregations are active, certified, voting members of that Association.  Which means, because we have representative governance, that each of our congregations have the right to send official delegates.

So, in the official mailing to the congregation about General Assembly, there will be a number of delegate cards, that number dependent on the certified size of the congregation and any Fellowship Ministers or Master's Level Credentialed Religious Educators serving the congregation.

In the past the assignment of those delegates was often a matter of finding out who had the time, money, inclination, and desire to be a delegate; when General Assembly was farther away, those available were more likely determined by time and money.

But this year, with General Assembly in our region, and an exciting new option emerging for off-site delegate involvement, choosing who will represent your congregation should be a more mindful process.  Why?  Not only because of easier access but also because of significant agenda items which should be decided on the basis of your whole congregation's interests and not just the personal desires of available delegates.

A short film about some of the options, issues, and choices for your congregation will soon be available to be viewed by anyone who wishes to do so but is especially recommended for congregational leaders.

Coming on Wednesday, February 23, 2011:
just go to: http://www.uufkw.org/HallelUUjah for links to various ways to view the film.

AVOID THE NOMINATING COMMITTEE CURSE

Moving to Leadership Development  - a Webinar, March 10, 8pm

Most of our congregations have some form of Nominating Committee structure, and in many of those congregations being asked (put) on the Nominating Committee is regarded almost as a punishment.

What would life be like if proposing a slate of nominees were an easy end result of a process that developed leaders more than just filled slots?

Join us on Thursday, March 10, at 8pm (EST), for a discussion about some exciting different ways of developing, preparing, and recruiting our elected leadership.

This webinar is open to all by pre-registration: if you are interested in attending this 1 hour (I promise just 1 hour!) online discussion, let me know at rbecker@uua.org so I can send you the information for connecting.

And part of the process of your preparation for this webinar will be my short video on the subject which will then be available for use with your local congregational leadership in sharing the ideas we will be exploring in the webinar.

District Annual Assembly

The Florida District Board of Directors cordially invites you to our Annual Assembly & Business Meeting April 8 - 10, 2011 at the First Unitarian Church of Orlando - the oldest Unitarian church in Florida.

We are privileged to have two remarkably talented presenters this year.  Sarah Dan Jones & Janice Marie Johnson will lead us through a day-long celebration and reflection on our identity, our heritage, and our future.

On this, the 50th Anniversary of the 1961 consolidation between the Universalist Church of America and the American Unitarian Association, we ask anew:

Where have we been?  How does our heritage inform today's witness?

Who are we today? How has our society changed? How have we changed?

What is our future? What unique mission does the Free Church in America offer to these

times and today's multidimensional, complex and challenged world?

Come be part of the conversation, singing as we go.

Give Until It Feels Good

(This piece is from the First Unitarian Church of Portland's  Annual Fund Drive Brochure, written by Rev. Thomas Disrud, Associate Minister)

A friend describes his spiritual approach to generosity quite simply: "I give until it feels good." I try to remember that in my life. Giving is not primarily an obligation, nor a duty and certainly not a burden. Generosity is an opportunity to make real our connection to others and to that which is larger than ourselves. Generosity is one of the important ways we participate in the Spirit of Life.

Generosity and most spirituality grow out of a sense of gratitude. We work hard and many of us struggle to overcome obstacles and oppressions. But we have also been given so much. We did not create our talents or our energy. The wonder of the natural world, the capacity to love and to be loved, to know beauty and to treasure friendship, life itself...these are all gifts we did not create.

The Spirit of Life calls us to respond with gratitude. One great theologian said that if our only prayer is "Thank you, thank you, thank you," that would be enough. But that feeling of gratitude for all we have been given also calls us to give back, to find ways to bless the world as we have been blessed.

Generosity is making love manifest in the world; it is offering our gifts in the service of building the Beloved Community. Generosity to this church supports a community of caring, compassion and hope with a ministry that goes deep both within and beyond our walls.

You have found a religious home here at First Unitarian Church. I hope you will express your gratitude and your dedication to this community with a pledge generous within your means. Give until it feels good.

Unitarian Universalist Legislative Ministry Florida

Dear Florida District UU Congregations,

uulmf logo artThe Unitarian Universalist Legislative Ministry of Florida (UULMF) asks your support by "sharing the plate" with us on either April 3rd or April 17th, 2011.  We are part of the Florida District and under the guidance of an 8 person Steering Committee; we coordinate the efforts of Unitarian Universalists to bring about legislative outcomes consistent with our UU values.  You can find out more at our web site www.uulmf.org .

When notified by a concerned and approved advocacy group, we provide "legislative alerts" to our email list with suggested actions directed at legislators.  Please join our email list by sending your name and email address along with the name of your congregation, to minister@uufg.org.  This list will never be shared with anyone.

We sponsor an annual "Legislative Day" in Tallahassee.  This year it will take place on April 13.  UU's from across the state will meet with their legislators in the State Capitol providing them with information on legislation impacting the issue of homelessness.  If you would like to participate email us at spsegner1@aol.com .

We sponsor educational events at local churches such as "Move to Amend" dealing with the issues of corporate personhood and "Broadcast Blues" a documentary addressing the need for media reform.

We leverage your investment in UULMF by using mostly volunteers and limiting expenses to website maintenance, printing, postage, and some of the logistics of our "Legislative Day".

In the future, we hope to be able to encourage younger UU's to participate in our "Legislative Day" by helping with some of their expenses and eventually have a volunteer representative in Tallahassee throughout the legislative session.

Please participate by supporting the "Share the Plate", joining our email list and coming to Tallahassee with us on April 13.
