An Energy Tip

Turn your water heater down to 120 degrees Farenheit or the "Normal" setting when home, and to the lowest setting when on a trip. Member Bonnie Bartling, installed an outdoor timer on her water heater, so it automatically turns off while she is gone during the day and turns back on in the evening when she needs it. Water heating accounts for about 13% of home energy costs.

Advancing a green, sustainable, and resilient Ojai Valley

New Year, New Direction,

New Officers and Director

Happy New Year E-news readers. I am very excited about 2011. Yes, there are many challenges at every level, but there is also so much potential. Do we look at the half empty part of our glass or the half full and move forward to preserve, protect and enhance all life on this planet by doing right in our little neck of the woods? I say the latter.

To that end, the board of directors asked the question -- how does the Coalition grow and fulfill its mission without staff? How do we better engage the community and build confidence that we are here to stay? Frankly, we have no clear-cut answers, but we're going to give a new idea a shot. If it doesn't fly, we'll try something else, because not existing, not being and doing, is not an option
-- is it?

To move us in this new direction, which we'll be talking about soon, is an awesome board of directors. I encourage you to get to know them at
http://www.ojaivalleygreencoalition.org/board-members.shtml.

To highlight: Kathy Nolan, recently elected to the board, was just elected to also serve as president. Dale Hanson was elected to her second three-year term and will continue to be our secretary. Director Tyler Suchman was also re-elected for a second three-year term. Thanks to both for bringing stability, history, and dedication to the table. In addition, we have a new treasurer.  Environmental lawyer and new mom, Sabrina Venskus, has been on the board for a year and was recently elected to the treasurer position. Last, but certainly not least, we welcome new board member and longtime community activist, Noel Douglas. I think everyone knows Noel, but if not, look for a proper welcome and picture in our February E-news.

I hope that wasn't too boring and dry. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation these are the dedicated, financially supporting, leading volunteers and building blocks of our foundation. You'll see their names listed on the side bar to the left. If you see them on the streets, say "Thanks," would you?

Then we asked and so many gave. . .

On November 23, 2010 we counted 62 supporting members of the Coalition. At the end of our membership drive, January 11, 2011 we had 145! Thank you to our new and renewing members (see below) for your help advancing a sustainable and resilient Ojai Valley.

In hope and determination,

Deborah Pendrey
Executive Director

Now Helping You To Remember To
Bring In Your Own Bags!

Thanks to funding sponsors Ojai Valley Green Coalition, Harrison Industries and the City of Ojai; the coordination efforts of OVGC members Carol Smith and Trina Grantham; and installation by Larry Yuva, several business locations in Ojai now sport signs reminding all of us to be angels by bringing in our own shopping bags.

Our fair community is just as much a contributor as any other to the problems plastic bags bring to our planet. The effort to get us all in the habit of using reusable bags is intended to mitigate the proliferation of plastic in our landfills, waterways, ditches, and ocean. The sheer number of bags add

Von's Bag Sign

up to high costs of resources for clean-up, difficulties with sorting machinery at trash transfer stations, dumps that are filling with non-biodegradable plastic bags, and wildlife that are sickened and injured by plastic debris. To top it off, lost or discarded plastic bags are unsightly litter as they blow and flow from place to place.

Plastic bags are either made from petroleum products or petroleum is used in the manufacturing process. Do single-use plastic shopping bags make sense in the current economy (they cost taxpayers millions each year) or for reasonable use of increasingly limited fossil fuels (plastic bags consume an energy equivalent of thousands of barrels of oil a day just to meet California's consumption)?

For more detailed information go to www.cawrecycles.org/issues/plastic_campaign/plastic_bags/problem

Together we can make a difference here in our beautiful valley and beyond. So let's all bag the habit and "BE AN ANGEL. PLEASE BRING IN YOUR OWN BAGS"!

Bike Racks Installed at Y Shopping Center

Von's Bike Rack #2

After more than a decade of waiting, there are bike racks at the Y shopping center thanks to the joint efforts of Ojai Valley Green Coalition Transportation Committee, shopping center management, and the City of Ojai.

The shopping center lost its original bike racks when the parking lot was resurfaced during the Vons supermarket's first major renovation over ten years ago. The parking lot was improved, but the bike racks were removed. That left bicyclists no place to safely park and lock up their bikes.

The project is a big win for bicyclists and hopefully this will increase ridership. It is also a major improvement for retailers in the center. Before this, bicyclists had to use whatever structure was available to park and secure their bikes and that was often the posts in front of business entrances. The congestion often proved a hazard for customers.

"A Christmas miracle!" said Transportation Committee chair, Suza Francina, after bicycling over to Vons to see them with her own eyes. "They're the right kind, front bike wheel is secure and your bike does not fall over when you fill your bike baskets with groceries, and they are in the right place, with easy access to the front doors."

Way to go, Transportation Committee! To get involved with the Transportation Committee or their projects contact Francina at SFrancina@aol.com.

Get ready for EarthPlay 2011 in Ojai,

a destination Earth Day Event

for your Green Business or Organization

Saturday, April 23rd, EarthPlay 2011 - 11:00AM - 4:00PM.

In celebration of sustainable living, global awareness, and the joy of nature, four Ojai-based green organizations are teaming up to host this once-a-year community event:  Food for Thought, the Oak Grove School, the Ojai Valley Land Conservancy and the Ojai Valley Green Coalition.

Please join us under the historic oaks, on the 150-acre campus of the Oak Grove School, 220 W. Lomita Avenue, Ojai, as one of the more than 30 expected exhibitors. Ojai is always a weekend destination and with 3,000 plus visitors at the last Oak Grove School Earth Day celebration, you won't want to miss this opportunity to share your earth-friendly products, services, and/or informational displays.

Along with environmental exhibits and a green marketplace, the day will include arts and outdoor activities for all ages, live entertainment, food, and more. Admission is free. Mix all this with the outreach skills of four nonprofits, and you've got a winner.

The Ojai Valley Green Coalition is spearheading the exhibitors' area. If you would like to be added to the list to receive all the details mid-February, please contact Deborah at (805) 669-8445 or coordinator@ojaivalleygreencoalition.com.

We look forward to having you join us for EarthPlay 2011!
