Gratitude unlocks
the fullness of life.
It turns what we have
into enough,and more.
It turns denial into
acceptance, chaos to order,
confusion to clarity.
It can turn a meal into a feast,
a house into a home,
a strangerinto a friend.
Gratitude makes sense of our past,
brings peace for today, and
creates a vision for tomorrow.

-  Melody Beattie

When you are grateful
fear disappears and
abundance appears

- Anthony Robbins

Every portrait that is
painted with feeling
is a portrait of the artist,
not of the sitter.

-Oscar Wilde

When we discover that
the truth is already in us,
we are all at once
our original selves.

KochiWalk1 Grateful to be me.

All my life I have had people describe me as creative. And all my life I have wondered what it was they saw in me to cause them to believe that. I assumed part of it was my talents for the visual arts. I could draw and create pleasing compositions, but my head told me those things were just mechanical, not creative. In college I never felt as "creative" as the other art majors. I always seemed to get good grades on my projects, but I felt I was just executing a craft. I felt I lacked the passion the others seemed to have for creating. I resigned myself to doing what I was supposed to do to complete the requirements for my BFA degree, and then, to get a job.

By my senior year, it was clear that a lucrative career as a fine artists wasn't going to happen for me. The artistic passion that I expected to appear during my 4 years at school never showed up. So, I signed up for a few design and architectural drawing classes, hoping they would help when it was time to look for work.

Fast forward many years. I found a job right out of school in graphic design. I stayed with the company for 23 years, working in various phases of the creative departments. I always did well (more good grades) and people continued to tell me how creative I was. But my head wasn't buying it. I hadn't picked up a paint brush or pencil to "really" create in over 20 years. And if you weren't creating original works from your mind (or where-ever), then you weren't really being creative. I was just making advertisements, using stock photos and images. My head told me I wasn't even truly utilizing my talents.

OK, let's step into the now. I am currently taking a business course that teaches wellness professionals to market their business from the heart (not the head). It has been a wonderfully enlightening experience. One of my first assignments was to find my ideal client market. This is something that I have struggled with for the past 2 years, I just couldn't figure it out. So I was very excited, albeit a bit skeptical, to get started on this task.  As I completed each of the exercises for the assignment, I'll be darned if I didn't come out with new realizations. I not only discovered who my ideal client is, but more importantly, I discovered who I am. And guess what, they are one in the same. My ideal clients are artists and creative people ...just like me.

I finally realized that creativity doesn't have to be expressed only on a canvas or paper. If you are a endowed with the creative spirit, it will be seen in whatever you do. It shows up in all the things you surround yourself with, in the way you dress, speak, and act... basically in the way you look at the world. That is why everyone else could recognize it in me, even if I could not. My head had created a story about what creativity was, and since I didn't fit into that box, then I thought that I wasn't "really" creative.

I am so grateful to be done with that story and to see things with more clarity. My life feels great and whole. I am so happy to finally embrace a part of myself that I've denied for so long. And I am very excited about creating programs to help others realize a life of fulfillment and happiness.

Do you feel there is a part of yourself that you're not fully embracing? A good start to remedy this is to ask yourself: What am I grateful for? Then, answer - everyday.

With gratitude,
Tonya

Tips for relieving stress and
embracing gratitude

Sometimes it's easy to forget how much you have to be grateful for in your life. Try some of the tips below to decrease stress and increase your peace of mind.

Increase your daily Gratitude. Write down 3 things in the morning to jump start your day and 3 things at night to bring your awareness full circle.

You need an hour of solitude a day, and I don't care what you have to do to get it. Use the time to do something that brings you peace and joy.

Keep everything simple from meals to holiday plans. Halve your To Do list. Don't promise anyone anything if there's the slightest hint that you'll regret it or it will be difficult to keep.  Read More

applesFood Focus: Apples
The old saying, "An apple a day keeps the doctor away," is fact, not just folklore. The nutritional stars in apples - fiber, flavonoids, and fructose-translate into apples' ability to keep us healthy.

Apples contain both insoluble and soluble fiber. One medium (5 ounces) unpeeled apple provides over 3 grams of fiber, more than 10% of the daily fiber intake recommended by experts. Apple's two types of fiber pack a double punch that can knock down cholesterol levels, reducing your risk of hardening of the arteries, heart attack, and stroke.

When it comes to bowel regularity, apple's two types of fiber tackle the job-no matter what it is. Both the insoluble fiber in apples and their soluble fiber pectin help relieve constipation (thus helping to prevent diverticulosis and colon cancer). The insoluble fiber works like roughage, while the pectin, which is found primarily in the skin, acts as a stool softener by drawing water into the stool and increasing stool bulk. On the other hand, because pectin firms up an excessively loose stool, it's also used to treat diarrhea.

Apples derive almost all of their natural sweetness from fructose, a simple sugar, but one which is broken down slowly, especially when combined with apples' hefty dose of fiber, thus helping to keep blood sugar levels stable.

In addition to their beneficial effects against chronic diseases including cancer, cardiovascular disease, asthma and diabetes, a flavonoid found only in apples called phloridzin may help prevent bone loss. If you're moving through menopause, eating an apple a day may help you keep bone loss at bay.
