Fear is the prison of the heart.

- Anonymous

Fear less, hope more;
eat less, chew more;
whine less, breathe more;
talk less, say more;
hate less, love more;
and all good things are yours.

Me&Guy2 Embracing Change
As many of you may have known, Health Counseling was not my only profession. For the past 23 years my main source of income came from my job as a Graphic Designer at the Asbury Park Press. When I started my part-time Health Counseling business two years ago, it was always my intention to eventually leave my graphic design job so that I could support my clients with their health goals on a full time basis. Financial obligations, and fear, kept me from making that move.

I worked most of my adult life for the Asbury Park Press. Over the years I held various positions, including management, and did well at all of them. But after a while, it all became very safe and comfortable (just the way our egos like it). So the thought of walking away from this comfortable position with it's steady income and benefits was quite risky. It scared me...so much so, that I never did it.

But, as life would have it, when it is time for change, change occurs. On July 9, 2009, I became a casualty of Gannett's reduction in workforce. My boss was very upset when he gave me the news. What he said was, "We tried everything we could to keep you. We must have gone back-and-forth with corporate at least fifty times". What I heard was, "It's time. There was nothing that could have been done to change this outcome because it is time for you to move on". Once I understood that, in my heart, I knew everything would be OK. By the time I got home that afternoon, I felt like I had just been released from prison. I was free!

I was fortunate to have received a small severance which allowed me to take the summer off for the first time since 1986. That is why you haven't heard from me in awhile. But now it is time for me to move - move down my path. If I've given you the impression that I no longer have fear, that is incorrect. I have plenty of fears about this unknown territory. But they won't stop me this time. I am looking forward.

Photo: My husband Guy & I during our family vacation to Orlando (this was 2 weeks after I was let go... Tonya, you just lost your job! What are you going to do now? "I'm going to Disney World!").  If you remember, Guy lost his job too this past January. Isn't it amazing how happy two unemployed people can be? Photo taken by either Guy, Jr. or Lee, I'm not sure which.

Is Fear Managing Your Life?
Fear can be a wonderful asset in our lives -- protecting us from dangerous situations and keeping us safe. But fear can also limit our lives significantly. While it may not be conscious, fear may make us think we are unacceptable or that what we have to offer isn't valuable. Fear may make us feel that we are not safe being ourselves.

In order to avoid feeling fear, we may limit our lives drastically, living in tiny little boxes. Living this way gives us the illusion of safety, but leaves us with an unfulfilling life that is void of passion. If we do decide to venture beyond our box and fear surfaces, a common reaction is to be everywhere but the present moment. Our minds race into the past or the future, cataloging every past and possible disaster, and we frequently stop ourselves in our tracks.

If we shine a light on many of our fears, we see they have a very limited view of what is "safe" and how to "protect" us. Many of our fears are concerned only with protecting us from humiliation and failure. While these fears are doing their jobs incredibly well, they are doing so with faulty and outdated programming. Many fears we have as adults are trying to protect us as they protected us when we were children. Indeed, many of our current, automatic reactions to fear were actually formed when we were children. We have grown leaps and bounds since that time -- but our fears didn't get that memo!

In many cases, fear is now simply a flag to us that we are entering new, unknown territory -- territory that may in fact offer us many opportunities for creativity, personal growth, and joy. We may simply be doing something we haven't done before, and we're not sure what the results will be.

Even so, it's important not to judge ourselves for feeling these types of fears. If we judge ourselves, we will bury our fears or disguise them. By denying our fears, however, we also deny our energy, creativity, and passion.

So what do we do with obsolete fear that doesn't know it is obsolete? We recognize the fear for what it is -- a feeling we've experienced many times in the past and a feeling we will experience many times in the future. We become very familiar with our own particular brand of fears and how we allow them to control our lives. It is especially beneficial for each of us to become aware of the particular behavior patterns we've adopted when we feel fear, so we can look at our reactions with a sense of humor and compassion. Then, if we wish, we can choose a different response, which can be a scary yet very exhilarating experience.

We will never be happy to feel fear -- it is fear after all. But fear is one of many signals that can help us on our path, when we do not allow it to manage our path. Where is fear managing your life today? Here are some questions to help you shine light on your fears. With each new awareness comes new power.
  • What fear reoccurs frequently in your life?
  • How is this fear holding you back in your life right now? (The more specific you are, the more helpful it will be.)
  • If you don't let this fear stop you this time, how will you benefit?
  • Will you manage your life today, or will fear? (Hint: Choose you!)

Eating Healthy on the Cheap

We're all cutting corners these days and finding ways to make our dollar go further. That might mean eliminating lavish items and activities, and even paring down the basic necessities. While some of us are tightening our wallets when it comes to spending, many are expanding their waistlines by turning to inexpensive, low-quality food. According to Slate, fast food giant McDonald's is making a killing off the nation's recession, with sales in 2008 surpassing the previous 2 years. They opened nearly 600 additional stores in 2008.

Many people have the perception that eating healthy is expensive and in fact, a luxury. We maintain that buying wholesome food is possible, even if your family is sticking to a tight budget. The truth is, buying processed foods and eating poorly can lead to a variety of diseases, including diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity. Choosing fresh, healthy foods can improve your diet, quality of life and also prevent food-related illnesses, saving you costly bills at the doctor's office.

With just a little preparation and grocery list in-hand, you can make healthy shopping an affordable and achievable goal.  Check out Michelle Pfennighaus' blog, where she shares some of her penny-pinching tips for eating healthy food on a budget.
  1. Cut back on animal products
  2. Eat more beans and whole grains
  3. Learn to adore the bulk aisle, buy only what you need
  4. Drink water, cut back on bottled beverages
  5. Eliminate prepared/processed food
  6. Use what you have already, even if it means changing a recipe a little.
  7. Plan, plan, plan. Don't put it in your cart without knowing what you're
    going to do with it.
Finally, be creative with your shopping and meal planning and have fun!
