Philanthropy Matters

A Newsletter of the
Fayetteville Community Foundation

This issue of Philanthropy Matters is dedicated to the memory of Gregg Ogden. Gregg was a member of FCF's Founders' Circle and Advisory Board.  Gregg was an enthusiastic supporter of  FCF from day one.  He was always ready to support projects to improve the Northwest Arkansas region and made a permanent impact on our region.  He will be missed.

Becky Brink

It has been my pleasure to serve as FCF Board of Directors chairman for 2007.  It has been a year of prosperity and growth as FCF matures as an organization.  Our asset base continues to grow with approximately $1.5 million, ensuring our ability to continue to positively impact our community.  Since our founding in 2004, we have awarded over $350,000 through our donor advised, field of interest and scholarship funds.  This is an exciting time to be actively involved with the mission and directive of FCF.

Along with our exciting growth, there has also been a sense of sadness at the loss of community leaders John Lewis and Gregg Ogden.  Both men were giants in the community and instrumental in the early leadership of FCF.  John was a founding member of FCF, instrumental in the effort to raise Founders' Circle funds and our first board chair.  He served as secretary of the Board of Directors before his passing.  Gregg was a member of the Founders' Circle and served on our Advisory Board.  Both encompassed the spirit of FCF by continually striving to improve Fayetteville and the Northwest Arkansas region through their philanthropic activities.

FCF's first community discretionary fund has been named in memory of John Lewis to honor his extraordinary leadership.  Administered by the board of directors, the John Lewis Memorial Fund will make grants to nonprofit organizations meeting critical needs in Fayetteville and surrounding communities.  By naming FCF's unrestricted fund for John, we hope to continue the caring, philanthropic spirit in which he lived his life.

To all of you who have financially supported FCF, on behalf of our Board of Directors,  thank you for making a difference in our community. We are truly appreciative of the trust you have placed in us as we continue to grow your Fayetteville Community Foundation.

Sincerely,

James W. Smith

Since 1951, the Washington County Historical Society (WCHS) has been dedicated to preserving and interpreting the history of Washington County.  The open member organization was founded by University of Arkansas professor, Walter J. Lemke.  The Society currently owns and maintains three historic properties in Fayetteville:  Headquarters House and the Archibald Yell Law Office located on Dickson Street and Ridge House on Center Street and uses them to host Living History Programs and other events.  Click here to learn more about WCHS.

IRA CHARITABLE ROLLOVER REMINDER

If you are age 70 ½ or older, you still have until December 31, 2007 to make direct federal income tax-free transfers of IRA assets (up to $100,000) to the Fayetteville Community Foundation.  While such transfers cannot be used to fund donor advised funds, they do provide donors with an opportunity to make a more immediate impact with their gifts and can be used with a variety of other types of funds to support the causes you love.  As a bonus point, the IRA charitable rollover counts toward fulfilling your required minimum distribution.  If interested, contact us to see how you can benefit from this unique giving opportunity.  To see an example of how it could work for you, click here.
