ANNIVERSARY

Gabriel Bien-Aimé to open Ridge Art's 10th anniversary show

It is a great pleasure to announce that we will be hosting Gabriel Bien-Aimé at the opening of our 10th anniversary show on September 19. M. Bien-Aimé who now lives outside of Boston traveled to Haiti in March to produce a body of work for us. September also marks our 10th year in business.gabriel M. Bien-Aimé will be in the gallery on Friday, September 19, from 6-10 pm and on Saturday, September 20, from 12-8 pm. The show will be one of the highlights of Art on Harrison 2008. Art on Harrison is the biggest art walk of the year that our arts district sponsors.

On a side note, while we were unpacking Bien-Aimé's pieces a few weeks back, clients coming into the gallery kept buying them. We were afraid we wouldn't have enough pieces left for the show at that rate, so we covered them up!

As most of you know, Gabriel Bien-Aimé is considered one of the two best living Haitian metal sculptors. The other, of course, is Serge Jolimeau. Bien-Aimé never uses templates and does all his own drawings. His work is in most of the major collections of Haitian art, including the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris. We feel very privileged to know him and his work and to offer that opportunity to our clients.

This link http://ridgeart.com/bienaimeportfolio.html will take you to our current website postings of Bien-Aimé's work. We will post the new pieces after the opening of the show in September.

Papier mâché by Michel Sinvil

The piece is signed "Michel" but not dated. It was probably made some time in the late 70's or early 80's. It Amosis a combination of several spirits - Bossou with Damballah/Aida Wedo entwined, an Erzulie Danthor veve drawn in the middle of their embrace, two Gede like faces at the bottom on either side and a trickster face in the middle. The piece was owned by Alexander Campbell Wylly, an assistant curator at the Museum of Modern Art in NYC. With the exception of some chipped paint on the secondary horns it is in very good shape. It measures 22" wide by 41" high.

Collaborative paintings by Prince Luc and Destin Domond

AmosLast fall we were privileged to host in the gallery two artists from Fondation Sant D'A Jakmel (FOSAJ), Prince Luc and Destin Domond. While they were here, they collaborated for the first time on a painting together and presented it to me as a gift. I love that painting and commissioned them to make four more to sell in the gallery.

The styles and techniques of the two artists couldn't be more different. Domond's work is visionary, depicting epic struggles in a parallel Vodou cosmos. His color lucpalette is almost pastel creating an underwater atmosphere. Luc's work, on the other hand, is more expressionistic and assertive with precise black outlining of his figures. Luc is a direct artistic descendent of Prefete Duffaut which is most evident in his use of bright, primary colors that we associate with the Caribbean. When they collaborate on a painting, Domond produces the architecture and Luc goes back over Domond's watery world and gives it more definite form by outlining the figures and adding primary colors to parts. The final results are quite striking.

Ferguson

    Amos

One of our clients has just consigned a totally charming painting by Bahamian artist Amos Ferguson. Amos Ferguson is probably the best known artist in the Bahamas. He was born in 1920 and has made his living as a house painter. He is still producing work. He generally uses enamel house paint on cardboard. This painting is in very good condition but does have one small scratch below the mouth near the center of the collar of the dress. It is framed but not well. It measures 16.5 X 20.
