INTRODUCING VIDHO LORVILLE We are extremely pleased to welcome Vidho Lorville, a good friend and
a superb artist, to our gallery. I met Vidho in Haiti almost 10 years ago.
At that time he spoke no English and was making a living painting cheap tourist art that is sold all over the Caribbean. He was part of a group of friends with whom I would go dancing on Friday or Saturday nights at an outdoor club in Carrefour called Caribbeno. No one in their right mind would go there now, but then it was ok and really fun. Eventually, Vidho learned English
and with the help of some American friends moved to New Orleans. There he really began to grow as a serious artist winning a summer fellowship to the prestigious Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine. When Katrina hit New Orleans in 2005, Vidho was able to find an apartment and studio in New York City. He has participated in several group shows there and returns to New Orleans from time to time to teach. Right now he has an installation piece in a group show at the New Orleans Contemporary Arts Center. He won another fellowship to France last spring and just returned from Japan where he hopes to have a show next year.
One of his paintings which he calls Bossou Twa Konn is absolutely
breathtaking. He told me it took him 3 years to paint it. The bull (Bossou) is almost imperceptible until it suddenly dawns on the viewer what is
emerging from this carefully constructed jigsaw of painted planes with eyes, feet and disembodied faces struggling to the surface of the painting.
His work is both representational and abstract at the same time. He always had a lot of finesse as an artist but now he has depth. His work is on fire
and it's beautiful. Vidho Lorville is an important emerging artist to watch Our reception for Vidho Lorville will take place on Friday, September 21,
from 6-9 pm. His work will be on exhibit through December 30. Please join us. |
