Optimize Your Investments

If you're in the most visible place you can be and your web site and marketing efforts are top-notch, you'll be able to grow your market share over time.  If you're online profiles are not optimized or your web site is not up-to-date with professional images and more, you must look inward to make the necessary changes to gain a greater response from your marketing.

Here we will explore five principles of good web design.

~Good navigability
~Use of consistent branding throughout
~Good use of images
~Use video wisely
~Strong typography

When is the last time you looked objectively at your web site? Or, asked someone else to? Print advertising's purpose is to drive traffic to your web site.  Your web site is your store front.  When your advertising drives brides to your site, are you optimized to ensure she's actually contacting you?

new website 1-5.1.10

Speaking of optimization, it's incredible to see so many people worried about their SEO (search engine optimization), but spend little to no time worrying about optimizing their online listings. If you're listed on a site like Perfect Wedding Guide and it's worth its salt, you should be able to provision that web listing yourself. You should be able to go in and add photos, text, and more. You should be able to send brides in to review you. But, it amazes me how few people take the time to go in regularly and optimize their online capabilities. If you have an online listing anywhere on the web - go to it now. Be sure it's up-to-date and using recent information. If it allows reviews, get reviewed! If you can add images, deals, FAQ's, Facebook and more - add it!

 Technology

Catersource Magazine

You have a smartphone and a tablet, now how do you use them?

Feature_Apps

Technology often gets ahead of our ability to take full advantage of it. Smartphones have been around for a few years, tablets for about a year, but most of us are still learning just how much we can do with them. Calendar, yes. Contact list, yes. Collection of photos, music, games, books ... all of those are easy to use, but there are so many more things you can do with your smartphone or tablet (or both). There are apps that can help you make sales, track ideas, communicate with staff, design an event. Some are specifically designed for doing business; some are basic apps that can be used in ways that make sense for the catering industry.

"I think we're up to half a million apps by now," says Gary Campbell of the Zilli Hospitality Group in Milwaukee. He looks for apps that can be useful for Zilli Hospitality on the Apple platform. Campbell is a strong Apple advocate because, he says, security is stronger on Apple, standardization across the devices works well and there are so many people using Apple iPhones and iPads that there are multiple reviews of apps. But many of the apps that Campbell has discovered on Apple also have versions on other platforms, like Android or Blackberry. With a quick search, you also can find similar apps that do the same thing on other platforms.
