Point of View

Brandi Zrallack - Market Manager, Perfect Wedding Guide

Point of view.  We were all taught to identify the point of view in a story when we were in school.  Is it first person or third person?  Why do you think the main character feels that way?  What event happened to make the other character feel sad?  Being able to identify with someone's point of view can make the difference between someone having sympathy or someone on the attack.

Most of us have experienced the rumor mill within the wedding community.  Whether you've been gossiping_networkingwitness to a conversation about a third party, or you've been the one creating the drama, or you've been on the receiving end of it, most of us know what its like to listen to hearsay.  For those of us on the attack, creating rumors, hearsay or trying to create drama and solicit people for our "team," you are only doing damage.  It is damage to the individuals you're talking about and damage to your own reputation within the community.  If you think you're only affecting those you're talking about, please know it's not.  For those listening to your comments, it comes back and affects you.  Description: gossip

For those that have been on the receiving end of the rumor mill, get out there and correct it!  So many times, I've seen people cower and hide from networking events or bridal shows expecting the rumors to pass over.  However, in removing yourself from the events, people begin to think the rumors chased you out of the industry.  Stay out there, address the rumors if they're false, and clear up the confusion!  Like in the "American President" starring Michael Douglas and Annette Benning, Michael J' Fox's character shouts that the American people are listening to the opponent because, "he's the only one doing the talking."  The moment Michael Douglas' character as President stands up and imparts his side, the tone changes and people take notice.

Don't stand by and let people paint a picture that is not true.  Either you position yourself or you get positioned in this world.  For AT&T and Verizon, Verizon was successful at getting people to buy into the fact that AT&T's network coverage isn't as good.  AT&T reacted with advertisements with Luke Wilson about being the fastest network.  Now as Verizon is offering their version of the iPhone, AT&T came out right away and put out advertisements advising potential customers that they are the only company that allows you to multi-task by talking and working apps at the same time and they remain the fastest network.  You have to stay out there and reposition yourself at every turn.

One word of advice:  Stay true.  Don't ever try to position yourself as something you're not.  Don't try to be the busiest photographer when you're not.  Don't try to be an exclusive floral designer if you're not.  When people can see you for what you are, don't try to convince them you're something you're not.  Be truthful and honest in your positioning!

For those out there that are listening to the gossip, get the facts before you pass judgment.  If you hear that someone is out of business, look into it for yourself so you don't miss an opportunity.  If you hear that someone is claiming bankruptcy, go to them and ask. If you hear that two companies are joining forces, look into it.  Just be sure to research the facts.

This is where point of view comes in.  Where one individual is attempting to sway your opinion of someone or some company one way, you must look at the point of view.  That person may see the situation one way, but the reality may be something completely different.  Do your homework and look into the facts.

Gossip and hearsay is easy. But, getting the facts, doing your homework and checking with the source to find out the real situation will allow you to keep a level head and will allow you to make your decisions based on facts, not on what others want you to believe.

So, whether you are the gossiper, the gossipee, or the silent witness, know that there can be missed opportunities to succeed when you buy into the drama that exists in the marketplace.  Get to the bottom of the problem.  Get the facts.  And, get into the real game...not the side show!

Wedding Industry News
As brides in the Triad and Triangle were glued to their TV last Friday to see what details would unfold in the royal wedding, Winston Salem wedding planner, Faye Valentine-Conlin of Coordinating Dreams (www.coordinatingdreams.com) was in her home country to experience the big event first hand. She graciously shares her experience with Perfect Wedding Guide here.
