Myrna Loy Center
Myrna Loy Center

Helena's community center for the arts opened in the former Lewis and Clark County jail in 1991. Taking its name from film legend and Montana native Myrna Loy, the center is a great example of adaptive reuse. The historic building served the community first as the Lewis and Clark County Jail from 1891 to the early 1980s. The dramatic stone castle-like fortress fits well with the Myrna's mission is to present media, performing, literary, and visual arts in an educational context. The Myrna offers the finest films and live performances throughout the year.

Canyon Ferry is known by many as a popular summer destination, but the Helena Valley reservoir also attracts devotees of a wide variety of winter sports. Canyon Ferry attracts ice boaters from across the region. The Helena area's ice-boating enthusiasts have known for years that Canyon Ferry is a prime place to pursue their sport. The sailor's say the lake's large size and the fact that there's almost always good ice and a relative lack of snow make it a perfect spot for ice boating. Add in the reliability of the lake's wind, and you've got a world-class ice-boat-sailing destination.

The Myrna Loy Center offers a zesty January lineup and a sensational beginning to the New Year. Kick it off January 5 with the lively, soul-stirring marimba of Tropical Montana. Then banish winter doldrums with the hilarious, highly interactive Second City Touring Company's "One Nation, Under Blog," January 16. Legendary folk singer-composer Ian Tyson takes the stage on January 24 and on January 27, the soulful, folksy bluesman Eric Bibb returns to Helena to dazzle you with his musical artistry.
