Stephanie Pauline and Joe Uveges'
1st Reveiw of the duo submitted by concert goer, writer, and More than Music associate -
Kathy Morford :
The passion that propels singer/songwriter Stephanie Pauline is a Tsunami. She puts her finger to her lips, gently taps and muses, "What do I want to Say?" There is a slight pause; an ebb. Then... an ocean of thought and revelation rushes forth. As you listen you are swept away by her and with her.
For this seasoned troubadour Joe Uvegas the journey continues. Joe is gentle, yet unexpected and surprising as that smile of his. He is like the non-threating river that has peacefully lulled along but is now so swollen it can no longer be constrained by boundaries.
Stephanie Pauline and Joe Uvegas have meshed their magnanimous talents together. The result is a new country project entitled "When the Smoke Clears". Each artist has proven to be a boon to the other. Lyrically, Joe extracts to the surface the depth of Stephanie's intensity with relatable clarity. Stephanie is lofty while Joe is organic. Stephanie is mostly reverent. Joe is a little outrageous. Stephanie offers hope for the hurting then Joe adds the joy for the journey. Vocally, Joe has refined and polished Stephanie's range while she has empowered the quality of his. To the musicality, Joe supplied the twang and Stephanie the trill. Together the music is more harmonious and beautiful. Together the stories are a little more real and relatable.
A mutual admiration for the love of songwriting led to the quip "Hey we should try writing together sometime!" Stephanie has been singing and composing her own original music since childhood. Admittedly she never thought she would create so fluidly with another artist. She describes her working relationship with Joe as "too much fun". She says they have laughed and even cried while nailing down the story line for "When the Smoke Clears".
The combined fan base of Joe and Stephanie has rallied approval for "When the Smoke Clears" through their pre-sale support. Their confident anticipation of great music helped to provided funding for this project which was recorded mainly in Nashville with the industry's best.
The strength and foundation of "When the Smoke Clears" is the vitality of the songs. From the Army wife to the unemployed Father (with everyone else included), these are the stories of our lives; the unpredictable age in which we live. Stephanie and Joe have portrayed this with keen insightfulness. The stories are compelling. They are expressed in gentle terms. They are a balm to the listener. When the smoke clears we may have tears in our eyes but we find ourselves to still be standing. Thank you for the excellent music - Joe Uvegas and Stephanie Pauline. |

Why do we support ministries such as More than Music? Because God is using this ministry to touch the hearts and lives of people in need. Because God calls us to come around and support His servants. Because they are doing what we can't do.
It is truly miraculous what has been accomplished through More than Music to date, given the relatively small band of faithful, private, financial supporters we have. This has been due to God's faithfulness and grace. It has also been due to the many sacrifices made by Stephanie Pauline and her family. Stephanie has worked more than full-time for many years and has waived her salary since this nonprofit was founded in 2003 to commit more funds to the work of MtM. We can do so much with so little! Still realistically speaking, for More than Music, Inc. to move to the next level of service, MtM needs $1,700 a month in base donor support. We currently have a shortfall of $1,100 in committeed monthly donations. Are you prompted in your spirit to join with the other partners called to support this ministry?

Highlights |
- Since the last newsletter, I, Stephanie Pauline have done three facility wide concerts, sharing my story and songs in three youth detention and treatment facilities. (I.e. Spring Creek, Zeb Pike, and Childrens Arc) At each of these my guitarist and friend Tim Collins and I shared the new music video for the song "Toy Soldier" and performed with it live. These concerts were, without a doubt, the most powerful concerts I have done to this day in ALL 10 of my years doing such concerts in like facilities. Many of the kids committed their lives to Christ and to His way. MtM is still working with Southern CO Youth for Christ to put on these concerts In the CO region.

Due to privacy laws pics in detention center concerts are rare. Pictured above is some young men at Zeb Pike helping us load out our gear. Below, Tim Collins, valued youth worker, Thomas, and I after the concert to over 40 "inmates" at Zeb Pike. All but 5 young people stood to commit their lives to Christ, and give themselves to hope; even those 5 were visibly moved. I told them God isn't done with them yet!
- MtM is in communication with the national director of YFC and the national director of YFC 's Juvenile Justice Ministry. We are discussing using the MtM concert experience as a means to recruit, train and plant mentorship teams (YFC affiliates) in the 1,280 facilities across the US that do not currently have any sort of Christ based mentoring program in place. PRAY that God would provide the team and recourses needed to see this come to pass. There is no measuring the impact this would have on people's lives all across this land. Th is is a world changer! Not by might, nor by power but by His Spirit - let it be.
- Our missionary to Uganda who is there receiving crisis counseling training through New Hope Uganda is BACK! Check out her "From the Heart" article below.
- The benefit concert put on for LeLaLoSA went off without a hitch, raising over $3000 to help Emily Stone further her mission to help provide job training and life skills to help women escape the bondage of prostitution in South Africa. Emily is doing great work in South Africa and we are so thankful to be able to be a small part of what she is doing. Find out more about this awesome ministry to THE LEAST, THE LAST, and THE LOST in South Africa at www.LeLaLoSAMinistries.com
- MtM is excited to welcome our new booking manager, Joanna Springer to the More than Music team. We believe her experience booking for the Swallow Hill Folk Festival and her music business degree will bring important added skill-sets to our work.

From the Heart
By Jenny Vaughn |

Mukama ebazibwe! (moo-ka-mah eh-ba-zee-bway) This is Luganda for, "Praise the Lord!". I am a long time friend of Stephanie's, a supporter of More than Music, and a person for whom God has used both Steph and MtM to bless my life in so many ways. My name is Jenny Vaughn, and in October 2010, I asked Stephanie if she would help me raise funds to go to Uganda for missionary training which was the first 5 months of 2011. She said "of course", as I knew she would, and she did an amazing job of glorifying God and communicating His heart to all of my local friends through a powerful benefit concert experience. God provided the funds I needed to get to Uganda and back, and so now, Vudyo! I am back!
I would not have been able to do all that I needed to do with out the funds and prayer support that the concert provided for me and then I my search for a covering organization for my mission I was again led back to Stephanie and More than Music. God used Stephanie and MtM to help fulfill the call God has on all of our lives "to go andmake disciples of all nations".(Matt. 28:19) That's what MtM is all about, "till everyone on earth knows and lives the love that is in Jesus Christ".
All of this to say, thank you to Stephanie and More than Music for living out that vision, in whatever way it serves the kingdom of God. So I extend my thanks, wabale (way-ball-a) to all of you as MtM supporters, for enabling Stephanie to do what God has called her to. God uses MtM in ways you may not expect, and true to the Lord, He will use anything surrendered to Him to accomplish His purposes in the earth. So I say again, Mukama ebazibwe! God be praised for all that He does, and for ministries like MtM, as it is all for His glory.
Stephanie asked me to write this month's, "From the Heart", as I just got back from Uganda last week. I learned so much to share, I needed a little direction, so Steph said, "just write about the biggest thing you learned while you were there." Ha!! easier said than done.
This is what happened, I went to Uganda and got to gaze long and deep at the heart and face of God. I was free from the fetters of American culture enough that all of the not being satisfied with what I have, and what I'm not, was changed to seeing how much God is, what He has given us in His Son. For five months we delved deep into the Bible to see what God has to say about everything. You may think I'm kidding but we talked about racism, ethnocentrism, the glory of God, worldview, the Bible, suffering, biblical counseling, biblical man/womanhood, biblical marriage and child rearing, the orphan heart and the Father heart of God, just to name a few. So much beauty was packed into such a small, yet glorious place.
So, the biggest thing I learned was, there is no area of life where God has not spoken, and spoken deeply to our deepest needs, no matter who we are, where we come from, we all need Him. God speaks deeper, loves longer, sees further into each of our need than I ever thought possible. Before I left, I thought I had a foundation that was secure in who God is, and what His word says. Turns out, I was on some really stable stilts, but now I have a broad, concrete platform of grace I stand on, from which to share the love I have been given in Christ. He has spoken to my every need, my every question, to the needs of every one alive. God healed and spoke to me deeply in my places of need, I needed to know God not just as Father, but as Daddy-and He spoke. I needed to know how I, as a woman, created in His image, reflect His glory, as all He has made me to be as a woman. I needed so know the difference between surrender and submission. I needed to know that when we suffer, we are imitating a God who suffered, not one who merely observes my pain, He knows it, has a purpose for it, and suffers with me-and all who suffer. I learned about the glory of God, and how that has everything to do with everything. God speaks loud and long to all of us, Come!
Psalm 34:8-10-
8 Open your mouth and taste, open your eyes and see - how good God is.
Blessed are you who run to him.
9 Worship God if you want the best;
worship opens doors to all His goodness.
10 Young lions on the prowl get hungry,
but God-seekers are full of God.
(from THE MESSAGE)
I am full of God, and He wants all of us to be full of Him. That is the only way to live a full life. The trappings of our life, whatever our culture, whatever our need, our fullness is always and only in Him. There is no lack in Him. God will speak to whatever need we have. He speaks to whatever need you have today. His love never fails.
Hey, I think someone wrote a song about that.... :) |

In the past 5 years, More than Music has sponsored
over 60 free concerts in correctional facilities and chemical dependency centers,
as well as supported social service ministries by hosting benefit concerts for them; raising over $40,000 net for other worthy causes just since 2010.
Through this work and so much more,
ministries have been strengthened,
hundreds of thousands have heard the message of hope and forgiveness
and lives have been transformed by Christ. |
