Dear friends of Open Books,
This month, we take a look at the importance of male role models (Happy Father's Day, dads!), introduce a variety of new offerings on Open Books' volunteer opportunity menu, and get to know this month's vol-star, who happens to be quite a spectacular male role model himself.
Whether it's at an event, in a program, or at the bookstore, we can't wait to see you soon!

On Dads And Other Great Men In Our Lives
As we take the time this Father's Day to honor the men in our lives, I encourage you to take a moment - maybe even several - to think about how crucial that male role model has been, how many of Chicago's youth are missing out on that relationship, and what you can do to help close the gap. 24 million children in America, or one out of three, live in a home without their biological father (1). In Chicago, 72% of poor families are single parent households, most of which are female-headed (2). Roughly 80% of teachers in Chicago Public Schools are female, with even higher rates in elementary schools (3). From the time they wake up to the time they head back to bed, many of Chicago's youth go through their day without interacting with a single male role model. Numerous studies link everything from higher self esteem and better grades to a lower chance of drug abuse and incarceration to the presence of a father or male role model. So what does this all mean? Fathers, you do a world of good for your own children by being supportive and providing a fine example of what a man should be, but it goes far beyond the walls of your own home. All men - fathers and non-fathers alike - can have a tremendous impact on their communities by stepping up and getting involved in local schools and community organizations. Open Books works with far more male students than male volunteers, and we are working every day to strengthen our male mentor contingent. If you are a man or know a man (that's probably everyone out there!), you can help. This Father's Day, make the commitment to be the male role model you had or wish you'd had for someone else who may not be as fortunate. Ladies, share this information with the men in your lives and let them know how much they are needed. Take the first step to becoming a transformative male mentor - sign up now!

Vol-Star: Kirk Guenther
Kirk Guenther just recently celebrated his six-month anniversary with Open Books, and we couldn't be more excited to rope him in for another six. Kirk has been an incredibly dedicated and consistent writing coach at field trips; we can count on hearing his cheerful "good morning" just about every week.
Talking to the whole literacy team about Kirk's amazing work in Adventures in Creative Writing field trips, the word that comes up over and over again is "helpful." They key thing, of course, is how Kirk connects with the students. He works wonderfully with students of all ages, putting them at ease, having fun, and helping them to write some truly impressive work. Beyond this, though, is his ever-present helpfulness. Whether he is handing out papers and pencils, answering the door for volunteers, collecting materials at the end of a workshop, Kirk is always the first one to step in and lend a hand, and we all notice it. Word is he's also a pro at getting his fellow writing coaches talking and laughing in the morning before our students arrive!
I encourage you all to get to know this fine fellow better by reading his answers to our 10 Questions! I think you will agree that his "something not a lot of people know about you but you wish more did" answer is really something. Read on and see for yourself!
