Dear Friends,

Summer is the season to get out and go places! Some people go to summer camp, while others head to the beach.  A few leave town on vacation or visit family in faraway lands.  And some lucky students in Chicago will visit us for one of our field trips!

Regardless of where you travel this summer, it's a good idea to keep a few great books with you for entertainment. This June at the store, we are offering a discount on select beach reads, but the best way to stock up on essential summer books is to come to our Half-Off Sale during the weekend of June 18 - 19!

We're also excited to announce that we have a full schedule of events in our store this month. In addition to an exciting author reading and game night, we've doubled the number of storytimes with the help of Emerald City Theatre and Blackbird Puppets.

No matter why you choose to visit Open Books this summer, every purchase you make here helps support literacy programming in Chicago. It has never been easier to enjoy the adventures of summer and make a positive change in your community!

A Theory of Great Men

A Theory of Great Men

Local author and award-winning educator Daniel Greenstone will celebrates the launch of his new book A Theory of Great Men with a reading and signing at Open Books. Join us!

A Theory of Great Men is a dynamic and intimate portrait of an irreverent, flawed man, one who has a talent for accumulating both protégés and enemies. George Cavaliere, a veteran high school history teacher and the narrator, has many attributes of a brilliant educator. He's a vibrant classroom performance artist, with both passion for his subject and an energetic delivery, yet his twitchy impatience with political correctness and his restless philandering lead to the unraveling of his career and his marriage. A part-time job coaching an underdog basketball team helps Cavaliere to confront his own shortcomings and begin to see that, although he is anything but a great man, he is, nevertheless, the master of his own fate.
