The Poetry of Procrastination (and Bracelets)
You've heard tales of moms, vacations, and even heartbreak. This month, we're bringing you two new poetic stylings from some ChiArts 9th graders who tackled more subtle themes: procrastination and bracelets. Yes, bracelets. In case you don't know, ChiArts is the first (and only!) public performing arts school in Chicago. These students are talented, brilliant, and trust us, they're not shy! |

Dear friends of Open Books,
It has been quite a school year! As we near the end of our semester, we are thrilled at what your generous support helped us accomplish in the last several months. Thank you for helping us provide one-on-one reading to students in eleven local schools through Open Books Buddies, getting more than 2,800 students excited about writing during Adventures in Creative Writing field trips, coaching 50 VWrite juniors toward success after high school, and helping put hundreds of books into the hands of those who need them.
Read on to learn about how you can support our summer programs (including our newest adventure!), and thank you once again for being such fantastic literacy enthusiasts!

Introducing: ReadThenWrite!
This summer, Open Books is premiering a brand-new, super-exciting new program for teen authors: ReadThenWrite! The 411: ReadThenWrite is a multi-week program that helps adolescent authors hone their literacy skills, write stories about their lives, and become published authors. Each week, Open Books will work with a crew of teens, providing both a weekly reading group and an ongoing writing workshop. We've sourced key texts in specific genres which are designed to excite and engage reluctant readers. After reading the books, students will delve into writing their own novella with the support of reassuring and knowledgeable writing coaches. The end result: At the end of the program, Open Books will publish all of the students' work and celebrate their achievement with a launch party at the Open Books Store.
ReadThenWrite is premiering this summer at two locations: Auburn-Gresham and Gage Park. Loan us your reading and writing expertise by signing up to volunteer! *Note: if ReadThenWrite won't work for you, don't fret! We are still looking for summer Buddies volunteers and field trip writing coaches. See what's available and sign up now! |

Find Us At Printers Row!
Here at Open Books, we kick off every summer with the always exciting and highly anticipated Printers Row Lit Fest. This year, the festival will take place on June 4 & 5, and the schedule is more jam-packed with literary goodness than ever before.
We are fortunate enough to be the nonprofit sponsor of the fest, and couldn't be more thrilled to stock our tent with must-reads, meet eager readers from all over the country, and raise awareness about literacy.
Come hear us speak during Fulcrum Point's Book Sounds program on Saturday or join in on the fun of our first-ever Spelling EEB on Sunday. See you there!

The Cases Were MADE For Literacy
Thank you to everyone who came out to Make the Case, our first-ever bookcase-decorating contest and fundraiser! Judges Amy Guth, Jonathan Messinger, and Patrick Somerville had a tough decision, but in the end, 3 teams emerged victorious:
Winner - Catalyst Ranch
Runner-Up - Best Western River North
People's Choice Award - Adams Street Partners
In all, it was a fabulous night of music, pizza, beer, and competition to celebrate and support literacy. Soon, the 9 decorated cases will be filled with books and delivered to 9 local nonprofits, enriching lives through reading, writing, and the power of used books!
