"If there's a book you really want to read but it hasn't been written yet, then you must write it."
~Toni Morrison
Dear Friends,
I like to keep this quote in mind every time a book is donated to the store. Each donation to, purchase from, and hour spent at Open Books is a step toward supplying our students with the skills and encouragement they need to write that book they have always wanted to read.
Supporting our city's youth with the means to express themselves is just one of the causes for celebration this month. As Open Books turns 5 this May, we are celebrating our members, hosting our first annual bookcase decorating event, and gearing up for the Printers Row Lit Fest!
We also know many of you have started moving, cleaning, and reorganizing this month. The team here at the store is eager to help by not only accepting the gently used books you've decided to part with, but also offering a 20% discount on all books in our Home, Garden, and Art categories to help you with your Spring projects. Come celebrate with us!

Printers Row Lit Fest, the Midwest's largest literary festival, is back on the calendar for this summer, and Open Books volunteers will be there helping to make it run smoothly.
Join us (and 50,000 other readers, authors, editors, and literati) for a celebration of all things book-related!
June 4 and 5
Visit Open Books at the Fest!
Shop! The Open Books tent will feature tons of great books for sale, proceeds from which will go to help support our literacy programs across the city. Donate! Make space on your shelves for all the great new books from the Fest and donate your used ones to us! Book donations are tax deductible and will help us expand our literacy programming in the year ahead. Just bring your books to the Open Books truck any time during the Fest and we'll handle all the paperwork for you. Spell with us! NEW this year is the Open Books Spelling Eeb, where contestants will spell words backwards for fun and prizes. Visit our tent for times and information. Want to help at the Fest? Wonderful! See volunteer info and sign up!

Have you checked in lately at Read All About It, the Open Books blog? There, you'll find the latest information on Open Books' literacy programs, events, store donations and discounts, news, and literary-themed fun! Lizzy, our Bookstore Coordinator, blogs about recent donations in a series called Out of the Box. And lately, our donations bins have been rife with exceptionally eccentric books and terrific rare editions! Lizzy has had the chance to write about such titles as The Shocking Truth About Water, Hardboiled Dicks, and Cooking for Nitwits. Read more about these weird and wacky titles (and more just like them!) here. If weird and wacky isn't your style, perhaps you're more interested in the rare and wonderful section, where we recently showcased a first printing of Roald Dahl's James and the Giant Peach and a second impression of Raymond Chandler's The Long Goodbye. Do you have anything weird and wacky or rare and wonderful that you've been meaning to donate? We happily accept book donations every day during store hours! |
