The Champion of the Open Books Classic is...

pride and prejudice

Thank you to everyone who voted in the first Open Books Classic!

Pride and Prejudice bested American Gods in our literary bracket.  Next March, we'll see if this classic can keep its title!

"A book is a garden, an orchard, a storehouse, a party, a company by the way, a counselor, a multitude of counselors."

- Charles Baudelaire

Dear Friends,

All through April at Open Books,

Plays and Poems get second looks.

Our walls boast color and, this month, art,

From young and old and young at heart.

Inside the store, two trees grow,

With prose and poems by those who know,

That books bought here means cash well spent,

Funding programs for our students.

April is National Poetry Month and we'll be displaying poems written by students who have recently visited us for our Adventures In Creative Writing Field Trips! Their magnificent work will be displayed on one of two "Poe-trees" that have sprouted in our store.  This is just one way to witness the creative storytelling that a purchase at the Open Books store funds.  While you are here, you can stock your own poetry collection by taking advantage of our month-long 20% discount on Poetry and Theater books or simply browse some of the artwork we will have in store for our very first Open Books: Open Gallery event. It's going to be a colorful, creative month at Open Books!  We can't wait to see you here!

Make The Case

Make The Case!

Open Books is hosting its first-ever bookcase-decorating contest and fundraiser, Make the Case! Join us on your own, or as part of a bookcase team, for a night of inspiration and creativity!

Teams (including groups from Catalyst Ranch and Best Western River North) will embellish bookcases to the theme of Reading, Writing, and the Power of Used Books.  Their works of art will be judged by Chicago literary scenesters, including novelist Patrick Somerville and Chicago Tribune social media editor Amy Guth.

Along the way, everyone will enjoy Haymarket craft beer, Piece pizza, live music, the awesome Bizarre Bazaar, discounts to the bookstore (right next door) and more!

At the end of the event, our fine judges will award prizes based on creativity, execution, and fidelity to the theme. Then, Open Books will fill the bookcases and donate them to partner nonprofit organizations across the city.

Help us put books in the hands of people without access to them, and have a great time doing it. Join us at Make the Case!
