This month, David McCarthy shares a wonderful story about working with his VWrite student last fall. Not only is this an enchanting account of a mentor-student relationship, but it's also an excellent example for mentors seeking the best grounds for open communication with their own students (wink wink, future VWrite mentors!).

Read on to find out how soccer became the key to success for David and Diego.

Dear friends of Open Books,

With March Madness just around the corner, the notion of competition invades public consciousness unlike any other time of the year.  So while Kevin launched his Classic Books Classic (a bracket for the rest of us!) in the Store newsletter and Anna talks about the battle to increase graduation rates in her upcoming Literacy newsletter, we wanted to set up a little poll to find out the #1 reason why you volunteer with Open Books, especially since we know that there are many ways to spend your free time.

So, scroll down to vote for the #1 reason why you volunteer; to learn about Make the Case, our newest fundraising event; and to meet our March Vol-Star Tim O'Brien!

POLL:

Top Reasons to Volunteer

at Open Books

At last month's Valentines for Volunteers, we asked the question "Why do you love volunteering with Open Books?" and we received tons of heartwarming responses! Which picture best illustrates what drives you to volunteer?  Check out the gallery and cast your vote, and next month, we'll share the results!

Here are just a few of the memorable responses...

MTC

Join us at our newest FUNdraising event, Make the Case, where teams will compete to transform standard bookcases into marvels of creativity based on Open Books' mission of Reading, Writing, and the Power of Used Books!

Non-competitors and teams will enjoy Piece pizza, Haymarket craft beer, music, browsing the Bizarre Bazaar, special discounts at the Open Books store (right next door!), and of course, the opportunity to support literacy in Chicago!

At the end of the evening, judges from the fields of art and literature will award prizes based on creativity, execution, and fidelity to the theme.  The following week, Open Books will fill the cases with books and deliver them to local charities like A Safe Haven and RML Specialty Hospital Chicago. (Do you know a nonprofit who would benefit from a Case? Let us know!)

 March Vol-Star: Tim O'Brien!

vol starOh, Tim, with an answer like that, how could you not be a vol-star? Truly though, it takes more than flattery to earn the title, and Tim has surely earned it.

We first met Tim as a volunteer at Printers Row Lit Fest 2010 -- 2011's will be coming up before you know it, so keep your eyes peeled, bibliophiles! He was friendly and flexible and genuinely happy to help, and it quickly became clear he had to become more involved.

And so he did! Tim has been an excellent bookstore volunteer for nearly 6 months, and most recently, he stepped up to join our Associate Board, where he'll get to further champion the cause by helping with networking and fundraising events. If you're interested in joining, read up on the board here, and to get a head start on meeting your future colleagues, check out Tim's answers to our 10 Questions!
