"When I get a little money I buy books; and if
any is left I buy food and clothes."
-Erasmus

Dear Friends,
Do you go mad for Marx... and meatloaf? Are you crazy for Kant... and cake? Are you enthusiastic about Emerson... and enchiladas?
Then March is the month for you at Open Books! We're turning the idea of March Madness on its head and offering a 20% discount on all Philosophy, Essays and Cookbooks this month. Nothing sparks a conversation on moral responsibility like a dinner of rabbit stew paired with a dramatic reading from Watership Down (just be sure to have copies of Aristippus and Epicurus nearby). Feeding your mind and body while supporting literacy has never been so easy!

The Open Books Literary Classic
March Madness wouldn't be complete without some sort of bracket showcasing competitors. Here at Open Books, we're more interested in books than basketball. That's why we've designed the ultimate literary bracket! During the month of March, we will pit sixteen books (8 classics and 8 modern classics) against each other to determine which title will claim victory in the very first Open Books Classic!
Can we expect Dickens to be great enough to correct Franzen's Midweatern oeuvre? Does Donna Tartt possess the secret to dim Virginia Wolff's lighthouse? Will Chabon's adventures wryly catch Salinger? Will we be able to come up with witty puns all month long? Stay tuned, faithful reader!
Each week, a new poll will be created that you will be able to vote on. The books with the most votes from each division will move on to the next round until only two books are left standing to compete for the title.
Voting will be announced on our Twitter and Facebook feeds and you will be able to track the results on the window of our store to see which title will win!
Round 1 voting has ended. Vote in round two here!

Make The Case For Literacy!
Where can you find convivial competition, bookcase beautification, bubbly beverages, a Bizarre Bazaar, and literacy lovers? At Open Books' fabulous Make The Case For Literacy bookcase-decorating competition!
At Make the Case, teams will gather to compete for fame, glory, and prizes as they transform standard 3-shelf bookcases into stand-alone marvels themed on Reading, Writing, and the Power of Used Books.
Non-competitors will cheer on the teams, enjoy food, drinks, and music, vote for their favorite bookcase, peruse the goods at the Bizarre Bazaar, and visit the award-winning Open Books store (right next door) for special sales.
At the end of the event, judges will award prizes based on creativity, execution, and fidelity to the theme. Then, Open Books will fill the bookcases and donate them to partner nonprofit organizations across the city!
Friday, May 13th
6-9 p.m.

The Glue That Binds:
Dazzling Donor David Meyer
We often mention how much we adore the kind people who donate to Open Books, and we've decided that it will be fun to highlight some of them in a new series titled "The Glue That Binds."
First up is David Meyer, a wonderfully generous 13 year old who is celebrating his Bar Mitzvah soon! David decided as part of his community service project to start a book drive for Open Books. It was incredibly successful. See (in his own handwriting, no less) what David says about supporting literacy in Chicago and find out just how many books he was able to collect for the cause!
