 | Poems Of The Month
Our selections this month - scripted lovingly by CICS Avalon Park 7th graders - put the grand slam back into slam poetry. We think you'll get a kick (and even learn a thing or two) from these bright-eyed poets.

Senior Literacy Interns: Why I'm Coming Back
One of our greatest gifts is the enormous talent and enthusiasm of our intern team. These folks eagerly dedicate their time to furthering the cause of literacy and are always ready with high fives and smiles on their faces.
This spring, we are excited to welcome back three of our crew as Senior Literacy Interns. Check out what Ross, Mary, and Tracey have to say about what's keeping them at Open Books.

Enriching Lives
through
Book Grants
As part of our mission to enrich lives through reading, writing, and the SHARED power of used books, Open Books is proudly committed to
donating 5% of our book inventory
to schools and community groups across the city.
Recently, we had the pleasure of granting books to four organizations dedicated to improving the lives of Chicagoans: Leland House, The Primo Center for Women and Children, St. Leonard's Ministries and Refugee One. Read more about these organizations to see why we're honored to work with them.
Do you know a group or organization that could benefit from a book grant?

 2011 Program Preview
At Open Books, we are constantly striving to expand our programs, spread the love of reading and writing, and get more books into the hands of students who desperately need them. Here's a quick look at the existing and new programs we have planned for 2011!
- Open Books Buddies will operate at 12 Chicago schools, helping struggling readers gain critical skills and confidence.

- VWrite will match six classes of high school juniors with caring and professional mentors in three schools across the city.

- Our new Ignite program will provide enhanced additional training for volunteers and workshops for educators.

- We will create an army of teenaged authors through ReadThenWrite, our brand-new literary study and publishing program.

We will serve students with over 23,000 hours of literacy programming!
