We will open the book.

Its pages are blank.

We are going to put words on them ourselves.

The book is called Opportunity and its first chapter is New Year's Day.

Dear Open Books friends,

I hope everyone accomplished a lot of reading over the holidays. I know I did! Between visiting family and friends and indulging in holiday cuisine, I managed to finish eight books myself. We're currently restocking the shelves with them (and many more). We hope you drop by soon to find your first great read of the new year and to let us know what you've been reading. With all that we can do this year to affect literacy in Chicago (donate books, give your time, or simply make a purchase at our store), I have a feeling it is going to be a good one!

This month, we are encouraging you to get a jump-start on your resolutions by offering 20% off all of the titles in our Health, Diet, and Foreign Language sections.  Here's to betterment of the body, mind, and literacy crisis in Chicago and beyond!

   Literary Resolutions for 2011

From the Open Books Store Staff

(and  some of our closest friends)

Kevin: I plan on re-reading some of my favorite classic books (first up is Mikhail Bulgakov's Master and Margarita!) to see how my understanding of them has changed over the years.  I also plan on donating to the store any books that have sat untouched on my shelves... so I can fill them with some of the exciting donations that we see come through the doors every day.

Lizzy: In 2011, I hereby resolve to read each and every one of the books on my 63-book-long immediate to-read list! And I have also resolved to not let my new immediate to-read list grow above 100. (I'm doomed).

David: My only real resolution is to teach myself how to cook, so I suppose the corollary is that I resolve to purchase at least one useful cookbook from the store.

Scarlett O'Hara: I will never go hungry again! Also, I will start thinking about things today and not tomorrow.

Rhett Butler: This year, I resolve to take more of an active interest in travel destinations.

Inspector Javert: 1) Arrest Jean Valjean,  2) Arrest Jean Valjean,  3) Learn a new language,  4) Arrest Jean Valjean.

Jean Valjean: I really need to cut down on the carbs this year. No more bread for me!
