Dear Open Books friends,

As you load up on spooky tales by Poe, Stoker, Lovecraft, and your other favorite writers of fright, take a moment to consider some of the scary literacy statistics that we are working to improve.  According to the National Right To Read Foundation, 42 million American adults can't read at all and 50 million are unable to read at a level that is expected of a fourth or fifth grader.

We hope you'll join in our efforts by purchasing your next great read from the store or attending one of our events this month. Costumes are optional (though we will happily give candy and a 5% discount on book purchases to anyone who comes in costume!).

Say BOO To Scary Statistics:

Join Us For The First Annual
Open Books Buddies
Virtual Book Drive!

Did you know that 61% of low-income households have no children's books at home? We're trying to combat that scary  statistic by holding a virtual book drive for our Buddies Program!

Studies have shown that even 15 minutes a day of independent reading can expose students to more than a million words of text in a year. We've already given more than a thousand books to elementary school students through Buddies, and with your help we can give a thousand more! For every $5 donation made at the store, you can pick from dozens of book spines to place on our virtual bookshelf, and all proceeds will go toward funding our Open Books Buddies Program.  Your donation will help ensure that our students have books to read at home as well as at school.  Come in and place a book or two on our virtual shelf today!
