Dearest friends of Open Books,

Happy National Literacy Month to you all! Add to this the start of the school year, and you will easily see why September is an all-time favorite at Open Books.

This year, we are celebrating with quite a crowd. We have 80 Big Buddies at our first 8 Open Books Buddies sites (more to come in October!), 55 bookstore volunteers finding our 50,000+ books fine homes with satisfied customers, 50+ VWrite mentors who are guiding our Gage Park High School students towards success, and of course the countless participants in all of our other programs that will be kicking off very soon!

Now more than ever, it is so important to think of all the ways literacy impacts us in our daily lives, to imagine the immense void left in its absence, and to always keep in mind how each and every one of us can help ensure that at least one more person gets a shot at building their literacy skills and learning to love reading and writing. Thank you so very much for the tremendous work you have done so far, and here's to another incredible school year!

            VWrite 2010

Join us this fall as a virtual mentor in a one-of-a-kind program! Coach high school juniors on college- and career-related writing skills via weekly e-mails and phone conferences, go on college visits and/or job shadowing days, and get your student ready for the next step via VWrite! This program is a dream for 9-5ers -- set your own schedule and volunteer in your pajamas if it pleases you. We are taking on two schools this fall, so there is plenty of need for more dedicated mentors!

If you are interested in joining any one of our fine opportunities, just fill out our volunteer form and sign up for an orientation.

September Vol-Star: David Watkins!

This vol-star celebration is especially timely. David has been a stellar bookstore volunteer for nearly six months. Now, he has just stepped up as our newest bookstore intern! Not only is David a champion at all the daily bookstore activities, but he also keeps the employees, volunteers and customers laughing with his excellent sense of humor. We've seen numerous browsers emerge from the stacks with a smile on their face and a large stack of books in their arms thanks to David. Whether it is shelving a new cart of donated books or holding a ladder for a few hours while we position a new store banner, David is always there to help any way he can.

Now that he's an intern, you can definitely get to know David better by stopping by the bookstore, but in the meantime, get a sample of his aforementioned sense of humor by checking out his charming answers to...
