Dearest friends of Open Books, This is THE time to be joining -- or returning to -- Open Books
as a volunteer, let me tell you. August, oh, August. The opportunities are endless,
and we are just about to kick off the school year, so you can be ready to go on
day one! What better feeling is there than that? As you will see below, we are
signing up hundreds of volunteers to
make sure we start the 2010-2011 school year off right. It will take 120
volunteers to make Open Books Buddies a success, 54 volunteers to work with our
Gage Park students in VWrite, and 50-some more to follow up with the second
session, and that's leaving out Adventures in Creative Writing field trips, our
new on-site after school homework club, the bookstore, storytime, and every
other way we find to engage you all in the literacy cause and your own Chicago
community. PLUS, if you join a program now, you get to come to the volunteer
party in a few days (and all those that follow)! Truly a win-win. So,
volunteers of yore, volunteers-to-be, we sincerely look forward to seeing you
soon, be it at orientation, game night, or any one of our upcoming volunteer
opportunities. Thank you in advance for the generosity and dedication that
will make this Open Books' biggest and best year yet.

Volunteer Opportunity HighlightsOpen Books Buddies Fall 2010: Reading More Than Ever Before!
Open Books Buddies is kicking off the new school year in
just a few weeks, and we need your help to make it possible! Please check out
the full schedule of sites for the upcoming semester. The priority
right now is to fill sites that are confirmed and beginning in September - especially our Irving Park, Bronzeville, and South Loop sites! Meeting
times and all other pending details will be shared as soon as they are
confirmed, so drop a line if you'd like to be kept in the loop about a certain
site that is still in its planning stage. Reserve your place at your favorite
site ASAP -- spots will go fast!

VWrite 2010
Join us this fall as a virtual mentor in a one-of-a-kind
program! Coach high school juniors on college- and career-related writing
skills via weekly e-mails and phone conferences, go on college visits and/or
job shadowing days, and get your student ready for the next step via VWrite! This program is a dream for 9-5ers -- set your own schedule and volunteer in
your pajamas if it pleases you. We are taking on two schools this fall, so there is plenty
of need for more dedicated mentors!
If
you are interested in joining any one of our fine opportunities, just fill
out our volunteer form and sign up for an orientation. Already been to an orientation? Email Ava at azeligson@open-books.org to get going! |

staff will be engaged in always-friendly competition from 4-8pm, so come by, meet your fellow
volunteers, and aim for a great prize!

August Vol-Star: Omar Muniz!
Omar has been a spectacular
volunteer at the Open Books store for nearly 6 months now. He is wonderful with
customers, always ready with a recommendation, well read, and truly cares when
he doesn't find the right fit for a customer. He also spent 5 months teaching
English in Prague!
In just one week, we'll learn even more about Omar as he
steps up as VWrite mentor at Gage Park High School.
Can't wait to learn more? Go check out the Open Books blog to see how Omar answers... The 10 Questions We Always Ask!
