Dear Open Books friends,

We've survived the ups and downs of June and July. The humidity and rain has come and gone... And come again.

August is here, and you know what that means.  It means... Well... In Chicago, it means that there will probably be more humidity.  More importantly, there will be more sun to soak up, and when there is more sun, there is more fun with the family.  August is Family Fun Month, so don't forget to spend time with the ones closest to you. One way to do so would be to bring the kids to Open Books' Storytime every Saturday and Wednesday in our comfortable Children's section.  While you are here, you can also enjoy a 20% discount on all Children's books through the end of the month!

Another way to celebrate your love of literature with us is to come in on August 9 for Book Lovers Day and get every second book you buy for 50% off! There have been so many great donations coming into the store over the last few months that there is sure to be something in store for you.

See you soon!

What We Read

In honor of Family Fun Month, we've shared our memories of our favorite childhood books below. We'd love to hear about yours. E-mail us at store@open-books.org
and tell us what your favorite book was as a child!

pasteurKevin: The Value Of Believing In Yourself: The Story of Louis Pasteur
by  Spencer Johnson, M.D.

This is the book my father would read to me each night before bed when I was younger. As a child, I was drawn to the bold artwork and story of the rabies vaccine, but as I grew older, I never forgot the last lines of the book: "what you may decide to do in your own life may be very different indeed! But whatever you choose for yourself, let's hope it will make you happier..."

Lizzyamelia: Amelia Bedelia Helps Out
by Peggy Parish

There was nothing better to little me than the Amelia Bedelia stories with the excessively literal maid Amelia Bedelia and her niece Effie Lou. This particular book was my favorite because of the 'date cake' that Amelia makes -- by cutting up a calendar and putting the dates in the batter! Also, I just have to give a quick shout-out to The Berenstain Bears and The Boxcar Children. How could I choose just one favorite children's book?

wembleyCharlotte: Why Wembley Fraggle Couldn't Sleep
by H.B. Gilmour

I had the original printing of this book, but they changed the title to Goodnight Wembley Fraggle. I'm a child of the 80's who never wanted to go to bed; my mom read this to me to get me to go to sleep.
