| Story Of The Month
This month, read a wonderful, hilarious piece by Anabelen, a 7th grade writer from Horizons for Youth, as she describes the downside (and yes, there is one) to eating ice cream before school.

Dear Open Books friends, Like many of you, we're having a fun and busy summer, and we've begun looking forward to the beginning of the school year. For us,
this time of year is marked with excitement and anticipation. We get to meet
all of the new, motivated volunteers who will make our fall programs run, and
we get to catch up with our friends who are back from summer travels. These are also the months where we are out talking about our
mission and getting to know kindred spirits in Chicago. This summer, you can
show your support for Open Books by simply joining us for an event in the
bookstore or in the community, telling your friends about our bookstore and
literacy center, or dropping off the summer reads now beginning to pile up on
your shelves. The more people like
you we have in our fold, the greater the action we're capable of. Thank you, as always, for your
continued support!
To literacy!

Meet Your Wordshop Leader: Anna Brenner!
In August, Open Books is thrilled to present Familiar Stories and Family Legacies, a
four-week Wordshop that will teach you how to turn your familiar oral anecdotes
into engaging literature and give you some crucial tips for recording your
histories. Recently, we caught up with Wordshop leader Anna Brenner to
hear more about Familiar Stories and
her thoughts on writing and literacy. Check out what she told us, and then sign up for this and other wonderful Wordshops at Open Books!

Open Books Teams Up With The David Weinberg Gallery This summer, Open Books joined forces with our sophisticated
neighbors at the David Weinberg Gallery to show some sharp-witted freshmen the
intersecting worlds of poetry and art. In the Open Books Literacy Center,
students waxed poetic before they traveled to the gallery to experience how
visual artists interpret their worlds and to create a little art of their own. Note the vibrant imagery in Anticipation, a poem the students wrote
as a class:
Anticipation is
sunshine.
It tastes like a sour
lemon without sweet relief afterward.
It sounds like the
calm before the storm.
It smells like a warm
dinner on an empty stomach.
It looks like a child
on Christmas morning.
Anticipation feels
like swallowing defiant butterflies.
