Dearest friends of Open Books, I decided to do a bit of research on what makes July extra
special, and I was pretty wowed by my findings. Of course, July is special at
Open Books because we have all three of our summer Open Books Buddies sites in
full swing; our high school essay writing workshop, Opinionated, has taken off; we're headed to Pitchfork Music
Festival with 30+ volunteers in tow (come to our table and say hello!); and
much more. It turns out there really is much more. For example, not only is
July Anti-Boredom Month (as Kevin mentioned in our What's In Store newsletter),
but also National Mentoring Month, National Make a Difference to Children
Month, International Zine Month, and of course, National Horseradish Month. So,
be it for your love of reading, learning, children, or horseradish, come
celebrate July with us! Come to an orientation,
become a VWrite mentor,
stop by the bookstore and pick up a cookbook for tips on using horseradish, or
join us for August's Volunteer Game Night (see below for details!). However you choose to get - or stay
- involved, we look forward to seeing you!

Volunteer Opportunity HighlightsOpen Books Buddies 2010
I am thrilled to share with you the Open Books Buddies schedule
for the upcoming school year! Pending meeting times and start dates will be
shared as soon as they are confirmed, so please let me know if you'd like to be
updated on a certain site. We are increasing our impact with two new sites, and
volunteers now have 12 schools to choose from. Reserve your place at your
favorite site soon - spots will go fast!
VWrite 2010
Join us this fall as a virtual mentor in a one-of-a-kind
program! Coach high school juniors on college- and career-related writing
skills via weekly e-mails and phone conferences, go on college visits and/or
job shadowing days, and get your student ready for the next step in VWrite! This program is a dream for 9-5ers - set your own schedule and volunteer in
your pajamas if it pleases you. We especially need more male mentors this
coming semester, so men, come on down!
Note: If you would like to participate in the upcoming session of VWrite beginning mid-August, please be sure to attend orientation no later than August 6th!
If
you are interested in joining any one of our fine opportunities, just fill
out our volunteer form and sign up for an orientation. Already been to an orientation? Email Ava at azeligson@open-books.org to get going! |
Volunteer Game Night!
As we prep for the fall, we are once again reminded how
completely impossible our work would be without our dedicated team of generous
volunteers. So, before we enter into the excitement the school year brings, Open
Books wants to take one more opportunity to spend some quality time with the
people that help make it all happen.
Volunteers, please join us on for a final summer hurrah. It's
the first-ever Volunteer Game Night, and we'll be debuting Turnest Hemingwheel
and his fabulous prizes! The entire Open Books staff and I will be engaged in
always-friendly competition,
so come by, meet your fellow volunteers, and aim for a great prize!
Thursday, August 12 4 - 8pm Open Books 213 W. Institute Pl.
Word
games galore in the store - Bananagrams, Boggle, speed Scrabble, the
works!
Random
games that have been donated to us - Pirates of the Caribbean and Beowulf
are board games!
Lawn
games across the way! Note: if anyone has bags/cornhole boards, please get in touch with Ava!
25%
off in the bookstore!
Prizes

soda, and general merriment!
Finally, please feel
free to bring along a loved one or three. We would love to meet them, and
after all, August is Family Fun Month.
To join in the fun, just RSVP to Ava so we have a rough head count when the baking begins.

July Vol-Star: Libby Hellmann!
Libby first came to Open
Books as a member of the mystery writers' author panel we held at our Grand
Opening. When she came back and said she wanted to volunteer, we were quite
pleased! Libby was one of our fantastic Big Buddies at McCutcheon Elementary in
Uptown this past school year. In addition to perfect attendance, Libby really
took ownership of her students. Every week, they would write a paragraph of a
story together, and the girls would illustrate it. At the end of the year, she
presented both of them with laminated, "published" versions of the
stories they wrote. Thank you for going above and beyond and being such a
fantastic volunteer, Libby! We are so lucky to have you in our network.
And now, head on over to the Open Books blog to see how Libby answers... The 10 Questions We Always Ask!
P.S. You can grab some of Libby's books at the Open Books store!
