Open Books friends and supporters, Thank you for another wonderful school year! Our spring
programming may have wrapped up, but that doesn't mean we're taking a break. On
the contrary, we here at Open Books HQ have kicked it into high gear to prepare
for a busy, exciting summer. In June, we said good-bye to the 200+ students and 100+
volunteers that make the Buddies program possible. While it's sad to part for
the summer, we were impressed by the progress made and the relationships
formed. For those of you out there
who volunteered as a big buddy or in another Open Books program this year:
thank you! You do a tremendous service to students and communities in Chicago. Now, we look forward to long, sunny days and warm months.
Join us at an event in the bookstore, or help us energize students to read and
write. With your help, we've begun creating a wonderful, vibrant community, and
with your continued support, we'll flourish.
To literacy!

Get Your Write On At Open Books!
This summer, join us for writing Wordshops at Open Books and
re-discover (or meet for the first time) the literary genius in you. Whether you're the beginning author
looking for inspiration, the budding memoirist, the established writer, or even
the workaholic who doesn't have "time" to write, we've got a Wordshop for you! Check out the summer schedule and register today. Space is limited, and
registration is first come, first served -- and, of course, proceeds go to help support our literacy programs. What could be better?

ReadOn 2010 Raises Nearly $20,000 For Literacy!
Congratulations and many,
many thanks to the dedicated participants of Open Books' very first
read-a-thon, ReadOn 2010! During the month of May, over 65 ReadOn! participants
read their hearts out and raised funds while doing so -- all for the cause of
literacy. We ended the month with a celebration of wit and competition at Fizz
Bar & Grill on May 26 for our first ever Literacy Olympics. Guests
participated in challenging games of literary trivia and backwards spelling,
enjoyed food and drinks and met like-minded, book-loving new friends.
We would also like to recognize our Little Buddies. They participated in
ReadOn! and read over 13,400 pages with their Big Buddies during the month of
May! Every school met or exceeded their reading goals and we applaud them for
sticking to the challenge and having fun while doing it!
Open Books would like to thank the Associate Board for their hard work and
creativity in launching ReadOn! and Literacy Olympics. These events are yet
another way we can all participate in fighting for literacy in Chicago, one
person (or book!) at a time.

It's hard to believe that 2010 is approaching the halfway mark, but we're thrilled to look back at all the wonderful students we've served in that time!
So far this year...
235
students have gotten one-on-one reading attention through Open Books
Buddies in 10 Chicagoland schools.
1,298 students have found their voices (and become published authors!) at Adventures in Creative Writing Field Trips.
Over 50 students have gotten their write on in Wordshops.
