Dearest friends of Open Books,

Very happy summer to you all! We are reorganizing the cabinets and dusting off our shelves as we switch into summer mode here at Open Books. With 200 volunteers helping to run the show at Printers Row Lit Fest, our upcoming summer session of Open Books Buddies, a chock-full slate of Open Books Wordshops, and so much more, things are hardly quiet here at HQ. Even still, we are already looking ahead to this fall, when every one of our programs will grow tremendously! We look forward to working with plenty of familiar faces and to bringing in some new blood too! In the meantime, come by for an orientation, join us for a field trip, participate in a Wordshop, organize a book drive -- there are countless ways to stay involved with Open Books year-round!

Volunteer Opportunity Highlights
vwrite

            VWrite 2010

Join us this fall as a virtual mentor in a one-of-a-kind program! Coach high school juniors on college- and career-related writing skills via weekly e-mails and phone conferences, go on college visits and/or job shadowing days, and get your student ready for the next step in VWrite! This program is a dream for 9-5ers - set your own schedule and volunteer in your pajamas if it pleases you. We especially need more male mentors this coming semester, so men, come on down!

If you are interested in joining any one of our fine opportunities, just fill out our volunteer form and sign up for an orientation. Already been to an orientation? Email Ava at azeligson@open-books.org to get going!

Get Your Write On At Open Books!

This summer, join us for writing Wordshops at Open Books and re-discover (or meet for the first time) the literary genius in you. Whether you're the beginning author looking for inspiration, the budding memoirist, the established writer, or even the workaholic who doesn't have "time" to write -- we've got a Wordshop for you! Check out the summer schedule and register today. Space is limited, and registration is first come, first serve.
All of the proceeds from Wordshops go to support literacy and future Open Books programs.  Don't wait -- get writing today!

June Vol-Star: Curtis Shaw Flagg!

It is my pleasure to present to you Curtis Shaw Flagg, June's Open Books Vol-Star! A brilliant Big Buddy at McCutcheon Elementary in Uptown, Curtis has been beaming with enthusiasm since our very first encounter. Beyond the hour he spent each week with his Little Buddies, Abdul and Daveion, Curtis has been spreading the mission like crazy and has his whole family in downstate Illinois collecting books for us! Curtis, thank you so much for the passion you have dedicated to your students and to the literacy cause. We are so thankful to be working with you.

Without further ado, please go ahead and visit the Open Books blog to see how Curtis answers... The 10 Questions We Always Ask!

Stay tuned for next month, when we honor yet another stupendous McCutcheon Buddy. Must be something in the water over there.
