Dearest friends of Open Books, This is it! May marks not only Open Books' 4th
birthday, but also the final month of the school year! Some of our students may
be a little extra squirmy these days, so we especially appreciate you sticking
with us and helping us to finish the year off strong. Of course, nothing is
really ending. As we wrap up the academic year, we are itching to jump
into our stellar summer lineup. If you're looking for a great way to spend the
summer months (and beyond), definitely check out all that's going on at Open
Books! Between our programs, events, and bookstore, we have tons of ways to get you out in the city or in one of our
colorful classrooms soon!

Volunteer Opportunity Highlights
Open Books Buddies Summer Session
Open Books Buddies will be going strong this summer,
and we need your help at two of our sites. Join us for a few weeks of reading
fun! If you have Tuesdays and Thursdays free, you can get double
the fun at Horizons for Youth in the West Loop. Join us there from 12 - 1pm! This
site will run from July 6 to July 29. Looking for fulfilling Tuesday mornings? Come read with us
at Mitchell Elementary in West Town from 10:45 - 11:45am! This site will run from
June 22 to July 27. If
you are interested in joining us at either of these fine sites, just fill
out our volunteer form and sign up for an orientation. Already been to an orientation? Email Ava at azeligson@open-books.org to get
reading!
Printers Row Lit Fest

Bring Your Office To Open Books!
Maybe you've heard the recent commotion surrounding Take
Your Child to Work Day, but here at Open Books, we're happy to flip that one
around. So that means you'd be taking your work to the children? Exactly! Does
your office have a volunteer day coming up? Perhaps your organization provides a grant or a stipend for service hours? If you would like to gather a
group of your coworkers and join us as writing coaches at an Adventures in Creative Writing Field Trip,
we want to hear from you! This is a fun opportunity to get out of the office
and spend a few fantastic hours writing with some truly wonderful students, and
there are some great giving opportunities tied in as well -- anything from
organizing a bake sale to sponsoring an entire field trip! If you're interested in spending the morning at Open Books
with a group of your colleagues (or know another group who might be), email Ava
(azeligson@open-books.org) to
learn more!

May Vol-Star: Roger Zanchetti!
This month, we are proud to honor Big Buddy extraordinaire
Roger Zanchetti. Roger has been a spectacular volunteer at not one but TWO Open
Books Buddies sites all year. An exemplary role model for his students, Roger's
dedication is beyond admirable. We can always count on Roger to be there (and usually early, at that!). He has been doing a fantastic job with some of our
more challenging students, and we could not be more thrilled that he will be
sticking with us at CICS-Bucktown through this summer!
Of course, you can learn
more about Roger by joining us for Open Books Buddies, but to start, why
not
stop by the Open Books blog and see how he answers... The 10 Questions We Always Ask! |
