 Dear Open Books friends,
Four years! Open Books is four years young!
We've come a long way from one person in a basement to nine full-time staff members, over 50 dedicated interns, more than 3,000 passionate volunteers, and thousands more supporters in the form of donors, customers, and spreaders of the good word of literacy. We couldn't have done it without you, and we have a lot farther to go! Thank you all for being here to help promote literacy in Chicago and beyond!
To celebrate our biography and future as an organization, we will be offering 20% off of every title in our Biography and Science Fiction sections through the end of the month. While you are in the store, be sure to check out our constantly changing New Arrivals shelf so you don't miss out on the freshest titles in stock!
Also beginning on May 9, you will have even more time to browse in the Open Books Store! We are happy to announce Sunday hours! No longer will you have to wander back and forth in front of the windows on Sunday afternoon, waiting the day away until we open on Monday morning. We will be organizing and selling books 7 days a week!

Spotlight On Literacy: Economic Oppression Film Viewing & Book Discussion
Open Books is proud to put the spotlight on literacy! The Spotlight series is comprised of quarterly events that confront literacy problems through the lens of current social issues. Our first Spotlight event will focus on the effects of economic oppression. We will be watching the movie Waging a Living and discussing the book The Working Poor: Invisible in America by David Shipler. Come join us for a discussion on how economic forces can contribute to illiteracy and other difficulties. Don't know anything about economics? Find the topic interesting but don't have time to read the book? Don't worry! Come anyway. Together, we can enrich lives through the COLLABORATIVE power of used books.
Saturday, May 8 3 pm FREE
The Open Books store has a limited number of copies of The Working Poor available for purchase at $9 each. Pick up a copy, read it, and come discuss with us at the debut of this important new series!

Open Books Recommends...
The Brief History of the Dead by Kevin Brockmeier
The last remaining person on Earth, Laura, struggles for survival in Antarctica after a deadly virus leaves the rest of the world empty. The dead remembered by Laura inhabit an expansive city much like the world we know, where people arrive and disappear with little or no warning. Left with an unknown amount of time in this city, the victims of the virus struggle to learn where and why they are before their time is up, reflecting the idea that mankind's curiosity lives beyond death. But for how long? Laura's memories are fading fast and no one is sure how much longer they have or what will happen to them when they disappear from the world they have come to know after death. This book is a reminder of how many people influence our lives and how seldom we take notice. Brockmeier has been an author worth watching ever since the release of his first book, Things That Fall From The Sky. With the beautiful prose of The Brief History Of The Dead, he cements his reputation. Brockmeier writes fairy tales for thinking adults. I don't think I am exaggerating when I say that he is the closest living talent to Nabokov the literary world has, weaving playful questions and profound sadness into his insightful narratives.
