Poetry Of The Month

Every month, we meet brilliant student writers from all over Chicago. Check out some keen verse scripted by our friends from Galapagos Charter School. And remember: there's no better way to escape the tangles of writer's block than to write about it!

Socially Enterprising

Open Books is proud to be a nonprofit social venture, and we frequently get asked what that means. In May, we'll start using this block for a regular column about our experiences running a social venture (including an extra-exciting announcement from the Social Enterprise Summit + World Forum on April 29) and how it makes us a little different from many nonprofits. Watch this space!

Dear Literacy Enthusiasts,

Greetings from the busy world of Open Books! We're celebrating spring by reading with students from Bronzeville to Uptown and sharing our love of the written word with anyone who dares cross our path! Here's a quick peek at what we're up to.

This month, 473 students of all ages and backgroundswill visit Open Books for our Adventures in Creative Writing Field Trips. We will launch Zines and Thieves, our first Wordshop, during which we'll teach teenagers the art of do-it-yourself publishing. We will continue reading with our 200+ Little Buddies. And that's just the beginning.

If you're looking for a way to get involved, consider volunteering, or stock up on your summer reads in our bookstore. Sign up to participate in ReadOnto blast through the books on your nightstand, or sponsor a fellow audacious reader. Bring in those old books you came across in your spring-cleaning. Then, find your favorite bit of grass, curl up with a good book, and open yourself to the wonders that lie within.

To literacy!

Zines and Thieves Launches With A Bang!

zinesthieves
April marks the official beginning of Wordshops at Open Books.  On Saturday afternoons, Wordshop leader and Senior Literacy Intern Annie joins forces with a merry crew of local artists and writers to help teens make their own hand-crafted zines.  Young zinesters flock to our literacy center from as far away as Englewood and W. Garfield Park.  Next month, we'll highlight some of their work -- get ready to be blown away!

Do you want to inspire other folks in the community to read and write? Then consider leading a Wordshop at Open Books! We are still accepting proposals on any literacy- or literary-themed topic. Learn more and submit yours!
