Dear Open Books friends,
We love Mad Libs. Let's play one, shall we? Fill in the blank: Spring ________!
What word did you choose? Fever? Cleaning? Training? There's a little bit of each going on this month at Open Books. As the final frost of the season passes, the store continues to grow and change with each day. If you haven't stopped by our Fireplace Lounge recently, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised with all of the new items we've stocked there. There's everything from a book that sheds fur to The Wizard of Oz Cookbook. The other shelves in the store are being renewed and refreshed on an ongoing basis as well, and each weekend we will be putting out two bins full of fresh dollar books! With all of these changes, we hope you'll check in with us as you get out of the house and enjoy the outdoors once again!

Heidi Durrow At Open Books!
Open Books is delighted to welcome author Heidi Durrow for a
special reading and signing event featuring her novel The Girl Who Fell From The
Sky. Winner of the 2008 Bellwether Prize for Fiction, The Girl
Who Fell From The Sky is a timely and moving bi-cultural coming-of-age tale
about the daughter of a Danish immigrant and a black G.I. A beauty with light
brown skin and blue eyes, she attracts much attention in her new home. The
world wants to see her as either black or white, but that's not how she sees
herself. Inspired by a true story of a mother's twisted love, The Girl
Who Fell From The Sky reveals an unfathomable past and explores issues of identity at a
time when many people are asking "Must race confine us and define
us?" The Bellwether Prize, established by Barbara Kingsolver and awarded
in even-numbered years, is the only major North American prize that
specifically advocates literary fiction addressing issues of social justice.
Read more about Heidi and her book, then join us to hear her read at the Open Books store!

Open Books Recommends...
We know how it is. There are so many reading choices
available at the Open Books store that picking one book can occasionally be
overwhelming. Fear not, brave reader! We are here to help!
There's nothing like browsing a bookstore for that hidden
gem, but sometimes you just want something with low risk and high returns.
That's why we've instituted the Open Books Recommends program! The
next time you are in the store, be sure to look for the paper slips with our
logo stuck between the pages of a book.
Look closer and you'll find a short blurb of recommendation written by
one of our staff members or volunteers... or you! (If you'd like to recommend a
book, just stop by the cashwrap and ask us for a recommend card!)
Our tastes may not always match yours, but we think we
are diverse enough in interest to have something for everyone. At the very least, our recommend cards
will serve as a conversation starter, thus furthering the SOCIAL power of used
books that we believe in!
Pictured above are two of Kevin's recommended titles: The
Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov and The Wolves in the Walls by Neil
Gaiman. Stop in the store today to see what he thinks of them!
