Dearest friends of Open Books,

A very happy March to you all! This month, we gain an hour of well-missed daylight, officially move into spring, and celebrate National Reading Month! How does Open Books celebrate National Reading Month, you ask?

During the month of March...

*100 volunteers will read with 200 elementary school students every week through Open Books Buddies.

* 16 volunteer storytellers will read to some of the luckiest kids in Chicago at Open Books Storytime.

* 50 volunteers will help book lovers find the perfect read at the Open Books Store.

Thank you for helping so many others celebrate National Reading Month along with us! We couldn't do it without you.

volcentral

Introducing: Volunteer Central!

Open Books volunteers make up a strong, innovative, inspiring community. Now, that community exists online! Are you a volunteer working with literacy programs, books, or events? Then check out Volunteer Central, the brand new online forum for Open Books volunteers! Here, you will find valuable resources shared by both Open Books staff and volunteers. Tell your favorite story from Open Books Buddies. Ask for tips on working with a hesitant writer. Brainstorm ideas for possible bookstore displays. Share your progress with your VWrite student. Volunteer Central can be whatever you want it to be, so make yourself an account and get posting! :)

February Vol-Star: Heidi Massey

March's vol-star is none other than the fabulous Heidi Massey! Heidi's presence at Open Books is fantastic. It is possible that she has helped you find the perfect read at the Open Books store. Perhaps you have admired the even coats of paint that she rolled onto the walls of our literacy center. If you're lucky, you've seen her in action at Perspectives Charter School as one of our awesome Big Buddies. Heidi is a wonderful asset to many of our programs, and is also an absolute champ at spreading the word about Open Books and our mission. We are honored to have her on our side!
