Poems Of The Month

Slam poetry is alive and well at Open Books' Adventures in Creative Writing field trips, and two classes from St. Barbara's recently showed us how it's done. Check out their thoughts on channels, cavemen, coffee, clocks, and more!

Dear Open Books friends,

Do you know a teacher or school? Open Books is looking for classes of Chicagoland students to join us for our Adventures in Creative Writing Field Trips and VWrite program this spring and beyond!

During a field trip at Open Books, students write and perform prose and poetry about their lives and experiences. Over 1,200 students have found their voices at Open Books, and our field trips have recently been featured on WTTW's Chicago Tonight and on 190 North. (Check out the video links in our Press section to see how much fun we have!) Field trips happen twice every week right here at Open Books, and we currently have openings for dates throughout the spring and summer. If you know an educator who may be interested or would like more information, please email fieldtrips@open-books.org and let us know!

VWrite is our virtual college and career writing program for high school juniors. We pair students with professional mentors, and together they work on resume and cover letter writing, college and internship entrance essays, and other professional skills (including e-mail and phone correspondence).  In addition, mentors have take students on outings to businesses and college campuses. To learn more about VWrite, check out this recent article from the New York Times, and then let us know (vwrite@open-books.org) if you know a class or teacher who might like to join us for the next session!

Are you an experienced educator or workshop leader?

Could you volunteer to create and/or lead a literacy program for Open Books in 2010?

Then we want to hear from you!

The Literacy department is now actively welcoming ideas for classes and workshops that benefit adult learners, families, or youth. We're happy to consider one-time, multiweek, and year-round offerings at any and all times (daytime, evening, weekend, or weekday). We also, as always, welcome partnerships with other organizations. Got an idea or suggestion! Please tell us about it by email (literacy@open-books.org) or through our site!
thankyou!

Strength In Numbers

In January, we asked Open Books friends, family, donors, volunteers and partners to help us compete for a $20K grant from Better World Books by voting for us with just one click. Unfortunately, we did not win this time around. The good news is that we were one of the top organizations and it was a VERY close race throughout the process. Despite the outcome, we were thrilled by the support and enthusiasm we received from all of you and feel truly honored that so many people would reach out to their personal networks to support Open Books!

During these less than predictable financial times, we remain open to a variety of traditional and creative fundraising opportunities. More often than not, the connections made through our incredible supporters are the ones that lead to larger financial contributions and long-term relationships with a growing number of corporate and foundation partners. Open Books would like to take a moment to thank you all for your continued support helping us enrich lives through our innovative literacy programming and PHILANTHROPIC power of used books.

We would LOVE to hear from you about any fundraising opportunities or philanthropic connections!
