Dear Open Books friends,

February is quite the month to be a volunteer at Open Books. If you are a participating volunteer, we get the chance to celebrate you and all of the wonderful work that you have done. If you are just joining us, we are announcing many new ways to get involved and can't wait to see you at a program or event soon!

Thank you so much for all that you do!

  New Volunteer Opportunities

Open Books Buddies in Bronzeville, Pilsen and Roscoe Village!

We are thrilled to be expanding Open Books Buddies to 10 schools this semester, and are seeking volunteers to join us at Bronzeville Lighthouse Charter School in Bronzeville, Jahn Elementary in Roscoe Village and Jungman Elementary in Pilsen.

Are you free on Tuesdays from 2:45-3:45? We would love to have you join us at Bronzeville Lighthouse for some great one-on-one reading! And if Mondays from 2:45-3:45pm fit your schedule better, our little Buddies at Jungman can't wait to meet you. (Spanish speakers strongly encouraged!) Are Thursdays from 3:15-4:15 more what you're looking for? Join us at Jahn Elementary!

There is an Open Books Buddies training on Wednesday, February 17 from 12-1pm. If you would like to join one of these sites, please RSVP for the training with Ava (volunteer@open-books.org).

Book lovers, rejoice!

As we expand our online book sales, we need your help scanning and sorting books to ready them for the Web. If you have daytime availability and are looking to be in the company of some fantastic books, let us know!

Born to lead? Design your own Wordshop!

Are you an experienced educator or workshop leader? Could you volunteer to create and/or lead a literacy program, i.e. a "Wordshop," for Open Books in 2010? The literacy department is open to your ideas for classes and workshops that benefit adult learners, youth or families. We will consider one-time, multiweek, and year-round offerings - daytime and evening, weekend or weekday, depending on the best time to reach desired constituents. We also welcome partnerships with other organizations. Find out more and apply to join us!

February Vol-Star: Liza Verzijl

It is our extreme pleasure to introduce you to volunteer all-star (vol-star, if you will) Liza Verzijl. Liza first came to us last October for our Volunteer Work Days and quickly proved to be quite the catch. The piles of immaculately folded Open Books t-shirts were only the beginning of what Liza had to offer! A tremendous help at the Open Books store and now a stellar writing coach at Adventures in Creative Writing field trips, Liza is a true pleasure to have on our team. Thank you, Liza, for all that you do!

The 10 Questions We Always Ask

ew
Valentine's Day (like every day!) at Open Books is about sharing the love of reading, writing, and used books, and no one is more passionate about the cause than Erin Walter. As she retires this month and hands over command to Program Director Anna Piepmeyer, Erin shares some thoughts on stories, helpers, and her time here as our first-ever Literacy Director. (All of you who love Erin: don't worry! She's not going far, and you're sure to see her at Open Books events and programs.)
Open Books
Open Books is a nonprofit social venture that operates an extraordinary bookstore, provides community programs, and mobilizes passionate volunteers to promote literacy in Chicago and beyond. We enhance lives through reading, writing, and the VOLUNTARY power of used books.
