Do You Love Open Books? Put It In Words!

If you are receiving this newsletter, you have been touched
by Open Books in some way. Many of you have personally helped a student find his or her voice at a
creative writing field trip, read and laughed out loud with a Little Buddy
during weekly one-on-one reading fun, mentored a high school student through VWrite, or helped a fellow adult polish his or her resume through WeWrite. Without the dedication and
intense commitment of volunteers like you, we would not be able to offer our unique
literacy programming to the over 2,500 children and adults we hope to serve
this year.
Now, as we count down to our grand
opening this fall, we invite YOU to make a different kind of impact on literacy in Chicago by sponsoring a naming opportunity in our long-awaited new bookstore and literacy center. There are over 900 ways to make your mark on our new home -- classrooms, event spaces, a publishing center, lounges, bookshelves, fireplace tiles, and more -- and we can't wait to help you spread the love of literacy by choosing one to honor a family member, friend, pet, event, or any other special person or moment in your life. For a full list of what's available and to put your love into words now, visit us at: http://open-books.org/store/whatsinstore.php |
Thanks for a super summer!Big thanks to our 20 weekly volunteers in summer sessions of Open Books Buddies! They provided over 160 hours of extra reading practice for their students over the past few weeks! Thanks also to our friends at Rock for Reading, who provided new books for students to keep! Studies show that elementary school students who read as few as 4 books over the summer are less likely to fall behind once the fall semester starts. Fall into fun!Calling all volunteers: past, present, and future! Fall is just around the corner, and we'll need more dedicated volunteers than ever to staff Open Books Buddies, Adventures in Creative Writing field trips, VWrite, WeWrite, our new bookstore, and more! Dates, times, and sites will be announced soon on our site. If you're an experienced volunteer of Open Books, we want you back! If you're new, we can't wait to meet you -- and we need to see you at an Open Books Orientation on Aug. 5 or 19 before you can join a fall program.

The Open Books team is out and about at events all over town this month, from National Night Out and the Bud Billiken Parade to farmers markets and music festivals. Check out the schedule and say hi to us there!

Construction has begun in our new space, and we're tweeting it! Follow the latest updates as they happen by adding openbookstore to your Twitter feed, or check our site for the most recent news.
What will the Open Books store look like? In part, that depends on you! We're looking for some amazing armchairs and gilt picture frames for the lounge and bookstore. Have any you'd like to donate for tax credit? Let us know at store@open-books.org! |
