May! In addition to our usual packed program and event schedules, Open Books is celebrating our three-year anniversary! It's been an amazing journey since our founding on May 1, 2006, and we can't begin to express how much we've enjoyed it or how grateful we are to all of you who made it happen. There's never been a more exciting time to be involved with Open Books, and the summer will be our most thrilling season ever! We can't wait to see you at a program or event soon.

Get Caught Reading!

A picture is worth a thousand words!! Reading is our main passion here at Open Books, and while we often focus on words, we thought photos would be a fun new way for us to express our mission. Open Books needs YOUR help to promote the joy of reading during National Get Caught Reading Month this May! We'll kick off this event from May 4-8 by venturing outside to take pictures of unsuspecting readers in various places. We need volunteers to help us take pictures...sign up now to be part of the team!

If you can't help with the kickoff, you can always upload your own photos to our Get Caught Reading photo contest! The contest runs from May 9-31 and winners will be revealed the first week of June. Prize categories include Most Unique Reading Location, Best Candid Photo of a Caught! reader, and Best Overall Photograph. Submit as often as you want (at www.open-books.org, of course) starting May 9!

The Literacy Landscape

lit side may09 The spring semester of Open Books Buddies and Adventures in Creative Writing Field Trips is almost over, and we'd like to appreciate all the dedicated volunteers who participate in those year-long programs. Join us at the Open Books office for treats, prizes, recognition, and celebration at the Grown-Up Sundae Social on Tuesday, May 12!

Looking for a FREE creative and professional writing workshop for adults? Join us on June 6-7 at Printers Row Lit Fest! Everyone is welcome to participate, and all former participants in our youth and adult programs are also invited to read their work on stage! Mark your calendar and stay tuned for details coming soon.

It's that time of year again! Join us for the BIGGEST and COOLEST literary event Chicago has to offer! Open Books is proud to be a Contributing Sponsor for this year's Printers Row LitFest. That means is that we need to provide 200 volunteers to help staff the Fest and help it run smoothly, and that means we need YOU to join us!

Grab a friend or two and sign up to help. There are lots of fun volunteer jobs to choose from. First come, first served! You'll get:

* A free t-shirt and lunch! (Yummy food!)

* To see the 'behind the scenes' workings of one of the city's greatest summer festivals

* And, of course, to help support Open Books and our mission of literacy in Chicago

Ready to help?
Sign up now!

Get more information about the Fest (including which authors plan on appearing!) and check out the Chicago Tribune's great cause marketing video at the Printers Row Lit Fest official site.
