 Drop Everything And Read!
When was the last time you sat down for more than a couple of minutes to enjoy a good book?
Open Books is opening our doors on Monday, April 13 to observe National Drop Everything And Read Day! You are invited to drop by our office anytime between 9 am and 5 pm where we will be turning off our phones and computers, and settling in to relax with a cup of a coffee and a good book.
Also in celebration of Drop Everything And Read Day, Open Books will be dropping books all around the River North neighborhood. Keep your eyes peeled for books with big red bookmarks popping up on the streets, riding the Brown Line, and taking trips on elevators.
In a hectic and stressful world, the pleasure and escape offered by reading is often overlooked. Don't miss this chance get back to something simpler and spend the day or a few hours reading a good book!

The pilot session of our VWrite program just wrapped up, and the Open Books team would like to thank and congratulate the fantastic volunteers, students, and teachers who led the way! Juniors in Krystian Weglarz's class at Gage Park High developed resumes and cover letters with the help of skilled mentors, who also advised students on professional writing and etiquette, college and career planning, and more. Check out our blog for sections on volunteers and VWrite. Saturday is the Sock Hop! Join us at 9 p.m. April 4 at the Empty Bottle for the 2nd Annual Spring Sock Hop, featuring Open Books Literacy Director Erin Walter (singing, playing bass, and almost 9 months pregnant). Bring your friends and any books you've been meaning to donate! |
April is full of events! From the Hidden Mitten Sock Hop to the Chicago Reader Book Swap, there are oodles of opportunities to join us in promoting literacy and celebrating spring.
Plan ahead! Printers Row Lit Fest is June 6th and 7th, 2009. Open Books is looking for volunteers for this amazing two day literary festival! Already know you're interested? Email Becca ( bkeaty@open-books.org) to be added to the list! |
Book drives, virtual book drives, book swaps, Open Bookshelves, and more! Open Books has 5 Fresh Ways for organizations and companies to get involved, and we'd love to work with your group to spread the love of reading across Chicago.
Is there a special event on your calendar? Make it a celebration of literacy with a gift to Open Books! We've got ideas for engagements, weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, and more through our new Celebration Giving program. Come find out more -- and congratulations!
Open Books is excited and thankful to be selected as a recipient of a Fitts Fund grant from Chicago's Second Unitarian Church!
