Hooray for February! It's almost Valentine's Day, and we're happily spreading the love of our wonderful volunteers, our amazing students, and the richness of reading, writing, and books. Have you found the perfect gift for your Valentine yet?  Not if you haven't checked out the cards inspired by our creative writing field trips!

Love Is Like: My Playstation...

...sauce, candy, an XBox 360, a rainforest, and a cupcake. How do we know? Because a class of 8th graders on a recent Open Books creative writing field trip told us so. We've taken their sentiments and turned them into awesome handmade cards, ready for you to order and us to send to your one true love!  (Also available for your temporary loves, your uncommitted flings, and your best friend's brother  -- we can even send anonymously!) Cards are $10 each and all proceeds go to fund future field trips and other literacy initiatives. Check out all the choices and order now in time for Valentine's Day!

The Literacy Landscape

lit feb09Our WeWrite workshops are now accepting participants ages 16 and up! Bring the aspiring writer in your life - teen or adult - for creative or professional writing classes with Open Books starting this week! WeWrite is fun for writers of all levels, so tell your friends and coworkers! Workshops are FREE but you must register.

Know someone with teaching, program coordination, and nonprofit management experience who would be the PERFECT fit for the Open Books team? We are accepting applications through Feb. 16 for a Program Coordinator in our literacy department.

Special thanks to all the wonderful volunteers we're seeing each week at Open Books Buddies, Adventures in Creative Writing field trips, and now WeWrite and VWrite! Always remember: Your gifts of literacy and mentoring have lifelong ripple effects for the entire family and community of the students you serve. You are making such a difference every day!
