On January 21, join us at the Signature Room's Gala from 7-10pm to benefit Open Books and eleven other worthwhile Chicago charities with a fun evening of fine food and drinks. This year's party is an exciting vintage circus "Big Top at Big John" theme and will be something NOT to miss, so bring someone special and enjoy an exceptional view for an exceptional cause! All profits from the reception go directly to the charity organizations involved.
Don't wait! Advance tickets are $75 at www.signatureroom.com and sales end this Friday, January 16. Tickets can also be purchased at the door of the event for $80.
See you there!

Calling all Reading Buddies! A second site has been added in Evanston (Thursday afternoons starting January 22) and our South and West side schools still need more volunteers like YOU. Check out the new Wednesday time slot in North Lawndale, as well as the West Town, Irving Park, and Auburn-Gresham sites! Open Books' first adult literacy program, WeWrite, is open to the public! E-mail Lindsay to sign up for creative or professional writing workshops in West Town this winter. New programs VWrite and VWrite start the first week of February! Thanks so much to everyone who has volunteered and turned in forms. Mark your calendars for the 6:30 p.m. orientation session at Open Books: Monday, January 26 for VWrite and Tuesday, January 27 for WeWrite. |

A special THANKS to all of you who made donations to Open Books in 2008. Your support means a lot going into the new year: serving thousands of students in programs new and old; opening the bookstore you've all been eagerly awaiting; and taking giant steps toward our mission. Thank you so much for helping to make it all possible!
Coming soon: Did your dog eat your Valentine (the card, not the person!)? Do you want to do something good for literacy this Valentine's Day (while making your special someone weak in the knees)?
Score another one for thinking ahead: Want to make a permanent mark on Open Books? In 2009, we'll open Chicago's first nonprofit literacy bookstore, and opportunities for being a part of this history-making achievement abound. Name a shelf after yourself, a chandelier after your Grandma, a classroom for your dog... Email Dani to talk about how!
