The holidays are upon us, and Open Books is here to help! Here are 3 wonderful ways to support literacy in Chicago as you find the perfect gift for everyone on your list.

1) Buy our books online through Better World Books.

2) Visit GoodShop and pick Open Books Ltd. as your charity, and a percentage of every purchase you make at hundreds of online stores will come right back to us.

3) Visit our fabulous Holiday Auction, full of incredible items donated by our friends and supporters.
The Literacy Landscape

lit dec08Be a mentor: anytime, anywhere!
In February, Open Books kicks off its new college and career prep program for high school juniors. Volunteers with strong writing and editing skills are needed for the 6-week pilot, and you can help no matter what your schedule or location.

Evening volunteers needed! We're beginning another new program in February - writing workshops for adults. Volunteers with Tuesday and/or Thursday evening availability plus good communication skills are needed for the 5-week pilot in West Town.

Big thanks to Big Buddies! The Open Books Buddies program hit a magic number last month. We now have more than 100 volunteers at our nine school sites! Thanks so much to all the Big Buddies for being such encouraging, responsible role models for our young readers.

You should recently have received Open Books' year-end wrap-up letter in your real live, actual mailbox.  (And if you didn't, send us your current address!  In the meantime, you can read the letter's content here.)  We appreciate all your support this year and hope Open Books has earned a place on your list of charities to support with donations.  We'd love to have the support of every single one of you - and, as always, contact Dani (312.492.4085) with questions!

Thanks to Lou Malnati's for supporting Open Books' work with National Novel Writing Month!  Pizza makes writing (and all activities, really) more delicious.
